Cummins: the truth

Submitted by orbit on September 27, 2009 - 9:50pm.

I am only posting this because Brian Cummins put out a piece today that blast opposing candidate for his ties to the Communist Party and his work with the labor movement. If you see the piece, you know that it is written as a dirty campaign piece. Cummins acts as if that is a bad thing when in reality Cummins is a member of the Ohio Green Party, a Socialist Organization and also has union endorsements. If Cummins can go down and dirty, using politics that appall the Green Party, can he be trusted with our Ward 14? See below for the Green Party touting his win in the primary. Interesting to scroll through to get to the announcement but it gives you an idea of what the GP is about.

Green Party Candidate Brian Cummins in Run-off Election for City Council in Cleveland, Ohio

September 10th, 2009 · 11 Comments

Posted by Dennis Spisak at Green Party Watch:

Green Party Candidate Brian Cummins won a run-off election for a November General Election seat to Cleveland, Ohio City Council on Tuesday Night!

Here is the message from Brian about his victory last night, including the very impressive vote totals.

This is especially good, because he became known for being a good councilmember, with integrity, who didn’t just go along with the majority when it wasn’t a good idea to. So, we Greens have a lot of hope for his victory in November as well, and we can be proud to have a successful candidate in a major city in Ohio for the 2nd time.

What’s most interesting about this election is that there will be a run-off in November 3 between the Green and a Communist Party leader. I wrote more about this at http://www.ballot-access.org. The title “victory” is misleading in the post above because the election isn’t over.

Fixed.

This is going to be a very interesting election, since it is between a Green and a Communist. If Nagin wins, will there be any significance of his election other than being the only CPUSA member elected to office currently?

I’ve spoken with Rick a number of times. He called me some 15-20 years ago to talk about jury nullification. And I’ve called him to talk about his and the CPUSA’s desires on ballot access.

He has always seemed like a pretty decent guy.

If I lived in that ward, I would have a hard time deciding which candidate might get my vote!

PEACE

Cleveland is a great place for third parties to mount runs right now, because

(a) Its so heavily Democratic, that Greens would have a better shot at winning elections than Republicans, in many cases, and

(b) The Democratic party in Cuyahoga County is one of the most corrupt in the country (do a google search for “Jimmy Dimora.”

Congrats to Nagin and Cummins!

@ #3

I believe there is a CPUSA member elected to a local council in Pennsylvania. However, she ran under the Democratic ballot line. I believe the BAN archives have records of this.

To clarify, I have been a member of the Green Party of Ohio since 2000 having served as Co-Convener for the Central Ohio Greens in 2000-2001 as well as a member of the State Central Committee for the same period. I am also a member of the Democratic Party and have participated in Cleveland city council’s Democratic Caucus throughout my first term that is ending this year.

Although as candidates, Rick Nagin and I may share some similar overarching interests and perspectives, our respective party platforms and personal viewpoints have stark differences.

My life experiences include growing up working in a small family business; studying and working in the fields of banking and development project financing; working for nine years within the Micro-Enterprise and Small-Business Programs in the Peace Corps (Dominican Republic, Latvia, Russia Far East and Moldova); working as an Executive Director for a local development Corporation in Cleveland as well as a Publisher/Editor of a local community newspaper.

I’ve pursued interests and been involved in sustainability initiatives and smart growth, urban planning since returning to the U.S. in 1999. This includes being involved in reviewing energy, transportation, community development and public services management and policy on Cleveland City Council’s Utilities, Community & Economic development and Public Services committees.

Also interestingly, the Communist apparently has ties with the Democratic Party and was endorsed by Dennis Kucinich (h/t BAN).

Thanks Ross for the information about Kucinich, I was just going to ask about that. I love Kucinich, and I’m glad he endorsed the communist. Greenism is a road to nowhere; only real socialism is worth standing for if you’re going to oppose the Democrats from the left.

Ward 14

We have drugs, prositution, decaying housing, holes in the streets, kids shooting each other, people going hungry, horrible poverty rates, to name a few problems in Ward 14.  Too damn bad that the real problems have to take a back seat to politics as usual by Mr. Cummins. Get back on track, please.

mud throwing

didn't work for Cimperman, maybe it will fail Cummins....

it WOULD be nice to see a clean campaign run for once in Cleveland - Ohio for that matter. You would think a Green candidate would be higher evolved.

Joe McCarthy lives again

In the Henry Gomez PD article today, Henry writes "But that is where the similarities end. Cummins is researching old news articles that Nagin has been quoted in, as well as pieces he has written for the People's Weekly World. To draw a contrast, Cummins cited a 1990 interview in which Nagin discussed his communist views."

Can we get to the year 2009? Cummins is turning into Joe McCarthy. Can this get anymore distasteful?

Maybe Ward14 needs both

Maybe Ward14 needs both councilman to work together.  Can the Cleveland Foundation fund this?  Give the one of the poorest wards in the city the moeny to have both candidates pool their knowledge to get this ward back to functioning within minimal standards.  What are the needs of Ward14? Let's start by just cleaning up the area in every way...get rid of drugs, prostitution, crime, weeds, trash/garbage, overgrown shrubbery, clean up the trash around the schools and the boys and girls club and other community centers and plant some greenery/flowers/trees then fix the sidewalks, patch the potholes, repair the homes, landscape the front and back yards, plant some trees on the tree lawns, (some of this could be done by hiring local people to do the work) also stock the food pantries and offer classes in cooking, cleaning, home maintenance, budgeting.  How about some good paying jobs for the people that live here, jobs that pay more than minimum wage and have room for advancement. Oh, also how about snow removal in the winter on the side streets so people can get out to the main roads.  I am sure there is more but these are the ones I can think of right now.  Please add to the list.

I think most residents of Ward14 don't really care about the past accomplishments of the next councilman.  They want to know what the candidates expect to do for the people who live in this ward.

Green Party

My August Green Party newsletter includes this statement about elections: The Green Party supports Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) , which would encourage coalition-building instead of negative attacks against opponents, and allow each of us to vote for our favorite candidate instead of the candidate we dislike least.

Joe McCarthy, et al

The glossy campaign piece that landed at my mother's house yesterday from Cummins no longer lists his Green Party affiliation or endorsers but does have Nagin working for the communist party in capital letters in large bold print. Interesting, tacky, and deceitful.
