Cleveland Activist Attacked In Public Park

The man that did the ranting is known as Sammy Catania. He's the Development Director of Tremont West Development Corporation, which is a non-profit neighborhood agency.

Black, 69, said that he was in Lincoln Park with his dog Yogi, when Catania approached him, ONN's Cristin Severance reported on Wednesday.

"From his behavior in the past, I carry a video camera, and I turned it on," Black said.

The confrontation started when Catania asked Black if he spread rumors that he was arrested on a gun charge.

They've disagreed in the past over development issues in Tremont, but this confrontation quickly escalated.

"I went to sit down and that's when he struck me in the right eye and in the face," Black said. "So I called the police."

Catania was not arrested that night, but Black's friend Lilly Miller went with Black to file a police report the next day.

"I was outraged," Miller said. "He's a senior citizen, and he was at a public park with his service dog and he clearly did not deserve this."

Charges were eventually filed for assault and menacing and all parties went to court on Monday.

Catania did not return calls seeking comments but he talked to a TV station about violence in Tremont after a shooting a few months ago.

"You know people have to vent, they have to get their feelings out, and then they have to be constructive," Catania said at the time.

Because Catania works with the community, Miller and Black hope that the development director goes to anger management counseling.

"He's angry and he's taking it out on people he shouldn't," Black said.
    
Catania will be sentenced in December.
