Wheel bearing grease re-packing by Charlie - every car has 8

Lost art.    Re-packing the grease in a wheel bearing.

We are all so ignorant and spoiled.

Driving our cars, or bikes, or airplanes or anything else that revolves.

Bearings are pretty spectacular.   Handling millions of revolutions without any perceptible wear, or complaint.

So, my friend Charlie showed me how his dad ART had taught him to repack the grease in an automotive wheel bearing.   (the blue gloves are new age because Charlie's hands became allergic to solvents, grease, oil, and all the other garage stuff).

First put a little paddy of new grease in the palm of your hand, and then rub the bearing down over the new grease and slowly you will push the old black, dark, grease up out of the roller bearing.  Rotate the bearing as you do this.   Wipe off the old black dirty old contaminated grease.  round and round.

Pretty soon the bearing will be refreshed with new, clean, grease.

Good, then the bearing will be ready for another 200,000 miles!  How many revolutions is that for a 15 inch tire?

Amazing that a bearing can do this - while we sit in our seatbelted coffee cupped Ipodded AC'd comfort knowing absolutely nothing about what mechanically is going on.

Who cares?  Corporate management will handle it....
