CLEVELAND - A well-known Tremont gallery owner was shot in the back after not complying during a robbery attempt while walking home from the Tremont ArtWalk in the early Saturday, police said.
Jeff Chiplis, 58, was shot around 12:35 a.m. in the area of West Third Street and Literary Avenue, police said.
A preliminary investigation revealed, two hispanic males approached Chiplis, owner of the Jeff Chiplis Studio on Jefferson Avenue, in an attempt to rob him. When he did not comply, one of the suspects shot him in the small of the back.
Chiplis was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he remains in fair condition on Monday.
The suspects fled the area after the shooting.
The Cleveland Division of Police asks that anyone with information about this shooting contact the Second District Detective Bureau at 216-623-5218.
A Tremont safety committee meeting with Cleveland police that was already planned for June 21will now address this crime. It will be held at 6 p.m. at the OLA St. Joseph Center church hall at West 14th Street and Kenilworth Avenue
