"No Umbrella" Screening at City Hall

Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Mon, 03/27/2006 - 23:30.

The Cleveland Film Festival screening of Laura Paglin's documentary "No Umbrella -- Election Day" quickly  sold out, but those who were n't able to get tickets got another chance in the rotunda of City Hall on Monday night. Free and open to the public, the film played at 6 p.m., before a city council meeting. About 100 people were there. Paglin is a local director who has been getting a lot of attention lately. The subject of her short documentary, which recently played at Sundance, is an election day fiasco in ward 7, that took place last November. The "star" of the film is councilwoman Fannie Lewis, who fought heroically  for her constituents right to vote that day, when the board of elections failed to provide enough workers and ballots at one poling station.

No Umbrella - An Election Day in Cleveland at its best, and at its worst

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 03/27/2006 - 22:59.

The grand theater of the Cleveland City Hall rotunda was the perfect setting to see NEO filmmaker Laura Paglin's acclaimed documentary "No Umbrella – An Election Day In The City". Thanks to Mayor Frank Jackson "Arts and Cultural Initiative", probably 100 citizens clearly enjoyed the free showing immediately preceded the city council meeting. The "star" of the documentary, long-standing and much-beloved councilwoman Fannie Lewis, was the star of the screening as well, as she and filmmaker Paglin answered questions following the show.

? of the day: What's do you know about "the Oh in Ohio"?

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 03/19/2006 - 20:44.
I just saw in the PD today a write-up about "The Oh in Ohio" premiering at SXSW - the write up makes it sound like they are giving Cleveland good press - so far the reviews of the movie look mixed to favorable. I saw them shooting around Coventry (this looks like VidStar) and Case, so I really look forward to seeing this. Who around realneo worked on the film - has seen it - met an actor - has a story to tell...

Creating a New Industry from the Film Industry

Submitted by prelude2cinema on Sat, 03/18/2006 - 11:13.

Intro: Alex P. Michaels here. Although I call myself the Film Czar, I have been really thinking that we have to redefine what we call the Film Industry. This is a new age and a new time. Technology has become the focal point for allowing us to create a new industry. So Prelude2Cinema is kicking off the creation of a new Industry here. A Digital Media Technology Industry. Our Studio expansion and TV show are a small part of this new industry that will create jobs and bring attention to the region. THE TIME IS NOW FOR MORE THAN TALK.

Sculptor Matthew Barney's five Cremaster movies have become an art-world sensation. But few have seen the complete film cycle, named for the muscle that regulates the height of the testicles in the male body. Cremaster 1 is set in a hovering Goodyear blimp, where a woman arranges grapes into geometric patterns that a bevy of chorus girls re-create on a blue Astroturf football field below. Cremaster 2 is a mythopoeic western that encompasses executed Utah killer Gary Gilmore (Matthew Barney), legendary escape artist Harry Houdini (Norman Mailer), bees, cars, country dancing, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and stunning scenic vistas. Both 35mm. Total 120 min. www.cremaster.net

CREMASTER 3
USA, 2002, Matthew Barney
The last-completed film in Matthew Barney's Cremaster cycle is the longest, grandest, and most accomplished. Shot in locations ranging from Ireland and Scotland to the Chrysler Building and the Guggenheim Museum, this surrealistic, dialogue-less epic embraces myth and history while offering up a series of visually staggering vignettes illustrating man's age-old proclivity to create and destroy. During the course of this inscrutable but fascinating "spaces" odyssey, Barney confronts Masons, chorus girls, punk rockers, a half-cheetah woman, and the architect of the Chrysler Building (played by artist Richard Serra). 35mm. 178 min.

REEL NEO to the Academy - see you next year

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 03/06/2006 - 00:16.

Who is the film industry in NEO? We started exploring this question at a film excellence roundtable, where over 40 partners in art came together to discuss growing their industry. Today, at a benefit for Independent Pictures - http://ohiofilms.com - called "Cleveland Oscar Night America", around another 150 came out to show their support for film in NEO. The more I'm around this sector of the local economic development picture the more I realize I don't know this industry - who they are, what they do, and how they operate in the regional economy.  This is worth figuring out, so next year some of the folks watching the Oscars tonight from afar can be thanking NEO from Hollywood.

NEO To Build Media Arts Center

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Thu, 03/02/2006 - 23:26.

Discussions at the NEO Excellence Roundtable on Film surfaced many areas where people want to pursue initiatives, but none had as much support as a "Media Arts Center".

Even without ever having seen a media arts center, I can picture what it looks like, offers the community, and adds to the economy.  To make this picture a reality, we need to help many community leaders see it clearly too. Let's start by throwing around some ideas - here's what we started with from the Roundtable notes:

Build global NEO film network

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 03/01/2006 - 03:13.

At the Film Roundtable we discussed strengthening our network of NEO film stakeholders but we were largely talking regionally. After the roundtable, Laura Paglin and I discussed how important it is for NEO film makers to be connected with LA (and everywhere else in the world) - we should have branch Media Arts Centers in other film centers, just like Kent State and CIA have branch campuses in Italy.

REEL NEO - inventing a new economy around film in NEO

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 02/28/2006 - 22:37.

The February 28, 2006 Excellence Roundtable on the film industry was unique. One local film maker at the roundtable explained this was the first time he had sat down with the industry.

For an outsider, like myself - a fan of film and an economic development professional who recognized the broad value of the film industry - this roundtable was a thrill in that we had so much talent in the room - accomplished film professionals who have shown in the world's festivals and distribute product globally. These successful artists are invisible (often struggling) entrepreneurs in this community, and this was the first time I'd met nearly every one.
