CAN COMMISSIONERS SWALLOW THIS ROTTEN DEAL

Submitted by Roldo on Sun, 08/10/2008 - 09:39.

The medical mart/convention center deal is much worse than anyone knows.

Square Sanders & Dempsey’s managing partner Fred Nance gave a smooth, if shifty, accounting of what we can expect.

NANCE WANTS ANOTHER $50 MILLION IN UNVOTED TAXES - NOT FOR RTA THOUGH

Submitted by Roldo on Thu, 08/07/2008 - 18:51.

Maybe RTA should be a private business. It might get treated better by Democrats.

Squire & Sanders’ Fred Nance asked today for another public subsidy of $50 million for the Medical Mart. He wants an added 2 percent bed tax to go for the deal. He said Tim Hagan, Jimmy Dimora and Peter Lawson Jones could do that without a vote of taxpayers. Isn’t that convenient.

well, would you lookee here..

It appears the Rocky River Nature Center has already been dedicated to a most deserving person, Harold Wallin, who was truly the founder of Metroparks Outdoor Education programs including the old Trailside Museum and Rocky River Nature Center.

Fallen Soldiers on America's Homefront

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 08/05/2008 - 21:03.

I was over by Glenville High School today and I asked my friend Snag what was the meaning of the shoes hanging from the powerlines. He said "Fallen Soldiers". I asked if he meant people from around here who were killed... a sort of memorial... and he said basically so. He said they did it in the army, too, and the three pair in the header today are probably for the people killed the other day over by St. Clair...

You will do as I say

Submitted by lmcshane on Sun, 08/03/2008 - 08:24.

Today 8/3/2008, Chris Ronayne gets a front page editorial on the Forum page of the Plain Dealer.  Chris lives in Cleveland and drives to work every day.  I know his commute, because I made a similar commute when I worked at Metrohealth Hospital in the eighties.*  My drive time?  Ten minutes from University Circle to Metrohealth Hospital. Sure, sometimes, it was 15-20 minutes, if traffic held me up, or, if it took forever to get out of the parking lot, but I literally made the commute every day with my eyes closed.  It scared me so much to realize that I was driving in a trance, that I committed myself to public transportation.

Taking Advantage of Our Good Nature

Submitted by metroparks muse on Sat, 08/02/2008 - 20:28.

No matter the uproar in Cuyahoga County, in Cleveland Metroparks, at least, it's politics as usual.  Or as unusual -  as the renaming of Rocky River Nature Center is proceeding over the loud objections of the public.

East Cleveland Historical Society: George N. Havens "A Special Time A Special Place"

Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Fri, 08/01/2008 - 22:12.

I have been reading the book "A Special Time A Special Place: East Cleveland Remembered" recently. It was written by George N. Havens  who lived in East Cleveland from 1924 - 1969. It is an interesting and very personal account of East Cleveland in the 30s and 40s.  It reminds me of some of Dick Feagler's reminiscences of Cleveland. It makes me think there must be many interesting stories of East Cleveland, ones not yet published. What stories do the residents of Roxbury Road have to tell?

WE STILL NEED NEWSPAPERS #2

Submitted by Roldo on Wed, 07/30/2008 - 13:05.

Back in April I wrote an item here about the necessity for newspapers.

As I wrote then, “Talk all you want about weekly alternatives, bloggers and citizen activists – and we need them badly as prods and sometimes even more – but newspapers have the heft, expertise and man/womanpower to go in depth on issues.”

GCLAC meeting offers illuminating insights on Lead Safe Living

Submitted by Sudhir Kade on Wed, 07/16/2008 - 12:21.

The lastest GCLAC Lead Safe Living meeting this past Monday, July 14, at the Lutheran Ministries building on the west side was an informative and particularly timely session, given the imminent arrival of Ohio Lead Awareness Week, July 21-25.  Events have been planned in conjunction with this statewide effort by various collaborators comprising the GCLAC to offer important educational and testing services.  All children 6 and under will receive free lead screenings throughout the week and a special press conference, featuring Mayor Eric Brewer of East Cleveland, (among others) will kick things off.

Abbott, Roman & Sam Lecture about Government Spending? Some Joke

Submitted by Roldo on Mon, 07/14/2008 - 11:04.

You have to laugh so you don’t cry.

I haven’t studied the report at all but the announcement in the morning paper quoting Dave Abbott, Joe Roman and Sam “Give Me More” Miller on big spending in Cuyahoga County is really amusing. Laughable. Absurd.

A Star is Born: Community Transformation at the Nexus of Social and Environmental Justice

Submitted by Sudhir Kade on Sat, 07/12/2008 - 18:44.

Back in January of 2007 I first proposed the application of innovative, sustainably powered aquaponics in tandem with organic farming to uplift underprivileged communities and resolve urban blight.  East Cleveland, where we have worked for years now, to facilitate positive change, remains a tremendous opportunity for Urban aquaponics integration, especially given the extraordinary connections falling into place recently toward the Star Neighborhood Vision.  A two-year quest to secure financially viable and socially redeeming use for the old Hough Bakeries building has finally manifested, through trial and tribulation, with the likely emergence of multiple schools at the Star Village, as it is now called, on Lakeview in East Cleveland.  REALNEO and Star Neighborhood Development founder Norm Roulet deserves kudos for perservering through political turbulence and facilitating the key connections to make this work.
