The Citizen Hauser video was produced by local independent film makers Jonathan Shick and Ryan Rodriguez, with Blue Hole Productions.  The video is unique both in its approach and subject matter as it directly highlights the struggle of one citizen participating in the public process to make Cleveland a better, more sustainable place to live.  In addition, there are comments from local public officials including Tim Hagan, Jimmy Dimora, Peter Lawson Jones, Matt Zone, Paul Alsenas, and Chris Ronayne along with environmental activists Elaine Marsh and Peter Griesinger.

A ClevelandBikes’ bike station for Northeast Ohio?

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Mon, 01/16/2006 - 11:15.

People on REALNEO’s website are used to thinking about new ideas and the way we can help create the city and region we want to live in. Rather than passive acceptance, readers at REALNEO are active shapers of the community.  Our area is increasingly considering the importance of health activities, lifestyle and the comfort and attractiveness of the region.  As a region, we are focusing on regional assets, including our parks and lake.  With that in mind, I want to discuss ClevelandBikes, a two year-old nonprofit, and our project to develop an asset to meet these goals…a bike station, a new piece of the transportation infrastructure.

Thinking of the Least of Us : Thoughts on Prison Reform and Second Chances

Submitted by Sudhir Kade on Tue, 01/10/2006 - 22:35.

I was truly inspired to write this entry by a photograph provided by one concerned citizen, Jeff Buster, which you can find here.  We need to reach out those functioning in such grey markets, driven by desperate circumstances to cross ethical lines to generate revenue.  We cannot fault the individual for his entrepreneurial moxie but we certainly need to prevent the vandalism, trespassing or other criminal activity often incorporated into these grey-market / black-market processes.   In short, the entrepreneurial energy needs to be channeled into completely legal venture opportunities.

Mayor Frank Jackson

Mayor Frank Jackson was sworn in as Cleveland's 56th mayor by Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones on January 2. It was a full house at East Technical High School with most of the city council members present to honor their former president. The new mayor received standing ovations as he entered the room, took the oath of office and after he finished his inspiring inaugural address.

Happy New Year, Envisioning Progress in 2006

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 01/02/2006 - 04:07.

I hope you are happy, as we begin 2006.

Over the past many years, the region has redefined and reinvented itself - now is a fair time to expect progress, and I believe we shall see that on many fronts, in 2006.

Clean, Renewable Energy is the Way to Sustainable Economic Development

Submitted by Sudhir Kade on Thu, 12/29/2005 - 14:50.

Clean, Renewable Energy is the way, I couldn't agree more with Ed (Morrison) and his blog posting.  I recently posted some information regarding Biofuels - You can find that and some of my relevant comments here.  We have such a great position as a region and a state in several of these technologies- some surveys put us near the top in the nation for both Fuel Cell technology and Wind Power.  The prospects of a wind farm out in the Lake have become much more realistic in recent times - that project would make a signature statement much like a new signature bridge would for our city and region.  And as Ed so eloquently noted, moving to clean energy will translate bottom line to many new and interesting job possibilities and ultimately economic development.

Sustainability and the Triple Bottom Line

Submitted by Sudhir Kade on Tue, 12/27/2005 - 14:22.

Certain buzzwords in the Sustainability community are used widely but not clearly understood - I thought I'd address two of those here - sustainability and triple-bottom-line focus.  Sustainability is most commonly defined as 'Meeting the Needs of the present generation in such a way as not to compromise future generation's abilities to meet their own needs' (Bruntland Definition). This speaks to methods which not only maintain quality of life but preferably improve it.
