REAL.COOP Media Open House Roundtable Planning

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 01/03/2009 - 12:44.

When Doug Clifton became editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, I was in frequent communication with Columnist Tom Brazaitis. I shared with Tom information technology advice to improve the newspaper - like adding email addresses to the articles in the paper (which they didn't do at the time), and completely transforming how they used the Internet. Tom suggested I contact Clifton directly, which I did, and Doug was very receptive to feedback and we ended up corresponding regularly.

I've been submitting events for my organization but am having some trouble entering the event location -- I can't type text in the blanks. Please advise. Thanks!

CleveEngSoc, I haven't seen this happen, and am having trouble reproducing it. (I've logged in as a "normal" user to ensure permissions aren't at fault.)

Bauhaus & Breuer: Preservation In Atlanta

Submitted by Eternity on Sun, 12/21/2008 - 16:40.

Please read and sign the online petition.

In response to several pieces posted on this site, all of which relate to historical significance of legendary architect, Marcel Breuer, I've decided, at the urgings of fellow blogger and preservationist, Susan Miller,  to post a piece that specifically concerns Breuer's final, monumental, public commission (completed in 1980) that site being The Atlanta-Fulton Central Public Library.  And while I am fully aware that RealNeo is a site devoted to all things Northeast Ohio, because there has been so much discussion concerning local preservation efforts for Breuer Buildings in Ohio, it can only help to bolster both local and national efforts towards educating the public-at-large about the importance of the relationship between civic identity, cultural wealth retention, socio-political integrity and fiscally sane, environmentally sound preservation.

REALNEO fonts and colors

Submitted by Jeff Schuler on Sat, 11/22/2008 - 23:07.

I've been messing around with some ideas for a favicon for REALNEO -- the little icon that shows up next to the URL in your browser, or when you bookmark the site, etc. Don't know about anyone else, but I'd really like to see REALNEO with its own icon instead of the standard Drupal raindrop.

I haven't gotten far yet, but I do believe I've hunted down the two fonts used in the logo, (heretofore a mystery, as far as I can tell.)

An old logo I found:

Since comments are such a rich part of the REALNEO site, and a common entry-point into discussions, I've added a page listing all comments ~ instead just the last 10 that appear in your right-sidebar's Recent comments block.

"Scanning the horizon for that man, woman, or committee that can pull rabbits out of hats"? Read REALNEO!

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 10/28/2008 - 06:10.

The Plain Dealer's Phillip Morris writes, in his column today, "I'm trying to play it cool, but in the wake of National City Bank's collapse, I'm frantically looking for silver linings"... "scanning the horizon for that man, woman, or committee that can pull rabbits out of hats"... "still listening for someone to convince me that there is continued reason to believe that Cleveland is reinventing itself and will emerge stronger and more efficient". Phillip is obviously looking for all the wrong answers, inspiration and leadership in all the wrong places, from all the wrong people who put NEO and America in this disastrous situation, and are still are in charge of our local and national economies... although not for much longer. And, Phillip is obviously hearing from his chosen "leaders" the same old lame-o, last-ditch Cleve-O establishment vision of salvation, highlighted in his column... "I'm just glad we still have good hospitals."

Sorry to tell you, Phillip, but our "hospital" leadership isn't any better to or for Cleveland, America and the world than NCC leadership, and is in fact the same people, and is answerable to the same few "Power Brokers" as NCC, and is failing. The leadership and owners of our bloated, inefficient healthcare system and health industry companies have sucked the unhealthy tit of America dry. Their prescription... "buy viagra, and go f**k yourself, America."

Is REALNEO safe for lurkers?

Identity is a crucial part of social software systems, but it can (and should) take time for an identity to reveal itself. Certainly, you can be invited to join an existing community by a friend—and that’s something we specifically designed for—but, even then, when you start to reach out from your “safety blanket,” your own identity comes to the fore. What do you do when you first hear of a new site to visit? I don’t know about you, but generally I’ll head on over and perhaps even sign up. As I poke around, I’m essentially anonymous. I have no ties to anyone or anything, and am free to move about without any recognition. This anonymity is important. It allows a new visitor to look around and get a feel for the place, and choose when and how to get started.

-- George Oates, Community: From Little Things, Big Things Grow (A List Apart)

How are we encouraging the lurkers to ditch their safety blanket and begin to participate?

Saving Post Drafts

Is it possible to store a partly finished entry? (Question via email)

Yes, entries can be saved as un-published drafts. Use this functionality to periodically save your work as you go along, or to put away a partial entry for later completion. (But beware! Read on...)

image galleries for posting images we want to store on server for comments

Submitted by Susan Miller on Wed, 04/30/2008 - 20:15.

It occurred to me that we might have an image gallery where we can post (via the attachment method) images. That way, if we had them on the server, even if they weren't promoted to the front page or even published on our blogs, they would have a url, and we could add them into comments. Currently it is my undertanding that we can't attach image files to comments. Would this be possible?
