He's targeting residences with security system signs on their front lawns. Short, Caucasian guy...maybe 5'7" or 5'9", thin, attractive, with short, spiky dark brown hair. Was wearing a white puka shell necklace. Had a dark blue lanyard/ID badge around his neck, both printed with the letters 'ADK.' The badge was turned around so that you couldn't see his name or picture. He came to my door yesterday--2pm on a Friday afternoon--and said he was from Honeywell Security Systems, and wanted to check my burglar alarm because 'there's been a problem with thieves cutting telephone lines to disable security systems before they break in,' and he was offering a 'free upgrade to a cell-based security system,' but he 'wanted to check my equipment.' I didn't have a good feeling about him--something was just not right--and I sent him on his way. Had a conversation last night with a friend who lives on W32nd St. in Ohio City: he had a similiar visit earlier this week! Short white guy, same pitch, wanting to come in his house and check out the alarm system for the free upgrade. This friend actually called Honeywell after the guy left, and was told that their reps make appointments, they never show up unannounced and they didn't have anyone working in his neighborhood. I suspect this is the same individual, and that he's casing houses with security system signs in the front yards. I have a Sievers sign; my friend an ADT sign. DO NOT let him in your house. Don't give him any information about your security system. Try and figure out what he drives/get a license plate number. He seems to be going on foot from house to house, but he's got to be parked somewhere nearby. Anyone have sightings or experiences like these? Please email the TWDC Safety Committee. Let's nip this in the bud before it becomes a greater problem; as a neighborhood we're being targeted by these predators, and we need to band together. You know who belongs here and who doesn't; keep your eyes peeled and make sure you report what you see. We may all be 'witnesses,' but we don't have to be 'victims.' The police can help, but it's ultimately up to us as a community to observe, report, and identify the issue before we can expect any assistance. Thank you for your attention; please be vigilant.
