This is an insane time of year for parents, kids and teens in the City of Cleveland. Besides the Ohio Achievement tests and the general chaos imposed upon our community by the senseless Transformation Plan--most are also scrambling for ways to keep their kids occupied during the summer.

Sadly, even jobs traditionally available to teenagers like camp counselors and lifeguarding are now desperately sought out by adults. 

It would probably depend on your viewpoint.  I would say that the residents on Sky Lane and near Bradley Road would be very interested in Mineral Mining Permit #10428.  The public notice for this application was placed in the Plain Dealer beginning in February.  I went on line to www.Cleveland.com to find one of the public notices by scanning the classifieds but gave it up as a futile endeavor.  The public notices are included with the classifieds and not searchable as far as I could tell.

As blogged by Debbie Webb, Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court Judge Alison Floyd recently issued an unfortunate order requiring victims of rape to undergo polygraph tests. In addition to deterring the report of rape by future victims, this kind of judicial behavior can actually have a traumatizing effect on the victims in this case:

 Cuyahoga Juvenile Court Judge Alison Floyd  had ordered several teen rape survivors to take polygraphs.  Disregarding the rape shield laws, the polygraph admissibility laws, and the sheer struggle for women, young or adult, to enter the court system to even help with bringing rape charges, this Judge has ordered that the victims take these tests, even though a couple were not on her court docket. Maybe this judge would benefit from an examination for fitness for duty.

My greatest cultural pleasure living in Cleveland has always been seeing the Cleveland Orchestra perform at Severance Hall - I grew-up experiencing the perfection of the George Szell era, and Franz Welser-Möst's current direction is my favorite since. In mid-2008, hedge fund manager David Einhorn took notice after Lehman Brothers made either an egregious typo or lied through its teeth. Lehman's "Level 3 assets" presented in its conference call were different from those disclosed in its SEC filings. Einhorn confronted Lehman management, who essentially told him to shut up and mind his own business. Lehman went bankrupt four months later.

Claes and my favorite cartoons are the old X-Men Evolution series, about teenagers with toxic parents in a toxic world who are mutants and have special powers and so save humanity. It is a hopeful story, in these troubled times. This video on Hulu is the conclusion of the entire series, which Claes and I never saw before... he will be very excited I found this.
