DID YOU TAKE YOUR YOUNG SCIENTIST AND/OR BEST FRIEND TO THE MARCH FOR SCIENCE HELD IN CLEVELAND, OHIO ON EARTH DAY, 2017? The march for Science was held on Earth Day – Saturday, April 22, 2017.
In addition to adults who practice science on a daily basis – their were also Young Scientists (young scholars studying science in elementary and other schools), babies in carriages, toddlers, and also our feline friends.
I spotted a family with three Young Scientists from Riverside School – where I am a voluntary teacher and am currently teaching First Grade Science and another class. This is my 13th year.
Participants, estimated at nearly 10,000, enjoyed the march which started in Public Square – went around the local streets and avenues – before returning to the starting point.
I was one of participants in the march held in downtown Cleveland on Earth Day, 2017.
I was there to protest the TRUMPling of basic values and rights. I have been involved with science and its applications for the public good.-- nearly all my life.
I am a retired structural engineer with experience in the analysis, design, and rehabilitation of bridges and buildings. Structural Consultants I have worked for were involved in the 1971 addition to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the structural design of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (opened in 1995), and the structural design of the 29-story Ameritrust Tower (opened in 1971) and now called The 9 Cleveland.
In addition to teaching at Riverside, I started the “Teaching Young Scientists in Cleveland’s Parks” program in 2016. Last year -- the program taught basic concepts in science, with hands-on-applications to over 700 young scholars in parks – mostly in west side’s Jefferson Park.
It was a thrill participating in the march and watching Young Scientists and our best friends stand up for Science.
