DID YOUR SPRING BLOSSOMS SURVIVE THE SNOW OF TAX DAY, 2022?

Fortunately, ours did – read on!

This happened exactly a week ago.

About half an inch of snow fell on the afternoon of Monday, April 18 – which also was Tax Day for us Americans.

Spring officially arrived on March 20th – a month ago.

While winter was officially over -- past years have shown that snow can fall in the spring season too.

For example, on May 7, 1974 – Cleveland got 0.1 inches of snow.

Here is link from an article in Cleveland.com on records of first and last snows in Cleveland from 1950-2020:

Our spring blossoms started coming out around late March – first the tiny crocuses followed by daffodils and hyacinths.

Star magnolias, Cleveland pear, and forsythia blossoms also showed up in the neighborhood.

The lead photograph shows a composite with a view of Jefferson Park -- taken from the second-floor of our house on Cooley Avenue on the afternoon of Tax Day, April 18, 2022 --showing the nearly half an inch of snow. The other three clips (going clockwise) show spring blossoms – our daffodils, our nextdoor neighbor’s star magnolia, and another neighbor’s forsythia –surviving with temperatures slightly above freezing – 34 to 38 deg. F

Fortunately the spring blossoms survived because the temperatures during the snow and afterwards remained above freezing. In similar situations in past years – the blossoms sometimes perished because of freezing temperatures.

The second photograph shows our flowers – hyacinths and daffodils that survived the snow and above freezing cold temperatures of Tax Day -- as seen two days later on April 20, 2022.

Our nextdoor neighbor’s star magnolia blossoms also survived the snow and above freezing cold temperatures of Tax Day -- as seen two days later on April 20, 2022. See third photograph.

There are 16 Cleveland pear trees in Jefferson Park located in the space between the tennis courts. These trees yield no pears – only blossoms. These blossoms as seen on April 21, 2022 also survived the snow and above freezing temperatures. See fourth photograph.

The fifth photograph show blossoms on another neighbor’s forsythia shrub along Cooley Avenue that survived the snow and above freezing cold temperatures of Tax Day -- as seen three days later on April 21, 2022.

Smokey (mother) and Gingy (her son) – our two outdoor cats and my constant companions followed me everywhere as I photographed the blossoms in our house. The last photograph shows Smokey (front) and Gingy sitting in the driveway on the evening of a pleasant Wednesday, March 20, 2022 – very happy that the spring blossoms survived. Galena, our golden retriever with a curly tail -- their friend – now at the Rainbow Bridge – we are all sure was happy too!

While we have had a few hot days (over 80 deg. F) – summer will officially arrive on June 21st.

Enjoy the spring and rest of the year!
