FLEETING PUBLIC ART! -- FIVE CHAIRS ON A TREE LAWN FACING JEFFERSON PARK!

On a pleasant summer’s pre-labor day evening of Sunday, September 5 – after I had finished played solo tennis (in the northwestern court along West 133rd) for 2-hours (hitting nine balls – one for each of the planets -- from one side to the other side and back to the first side) – and was packing up my stuff -- my Marc's bag holding the tennis equipment and campaign signs (I am campaigning for one of the mayoral candidates) – my eye moved to the other side of West 133rd --. the western side.

There on the tree lawn facing one of the houses were chairs – four armless and one with arms -- lined up -- in a slightly curved line – the left one a little back, then three a little in the front, and then the fifth one – also a little back.

The photograph shows the five chairs.

Obviously they were empty – meaning no one was sitting on them.

If they were occupied – then the occupants would have been the focus of my attention.

On a closer examination – I observed they were wooden chairs with upholstered seats in a light-colored fabric.

And the wooden frames with a brown or cherry color were full of curved lines (sinuous curves) – both in the back – the arms (only one chair had arms) and the legs.

Curved lines have more aesthetic appeal (in my opinion) than straight lines. That is why there are no straight lines in nature – every thing is curved.

The chairs looked flawless – the end product of a well thought out design by a nameless designer.

The owner of the house had no more use for them – and they got moved from the dining room to the tree lawn – a little too early for the bulk-pick up – scheduled not for Tuesday morning (as the owner thought) – but for a day later because of the holiday.

The five mass produced designer chairs sitting on a grassy tree lawn surrounded (not shown) by majestic trees – maples, sycamores, and oaks – just as the golden rays of the setting sun had vanished – created a visually striking scene -- that pleased my aesthetic sensibilities.

I was truly delighted!

What a topping to a nice evening!

Enjoy the summer!

PS: The chairs were no longer there when I checked the next evening. Bulk items – if they are of any value – get carted away by people driving around in their pick-ups.

For a moment – I felt a certain emptiness. If the scene described was set in an art museum like our Cleveland Museum of Art – there would be critical acclaim, art reviews, and Clevelanders lining up to see the artwork.

Not sure if the original owners were missing their chairs – probably good riddance for them.

And the person who picked them up – is spending sleepless nights figuring out what happened to the sixth chair (assuming that the owner had a rectangular dining table with six chairs).
