High radiation at Perry Nuclear Power Plant Ohio - april 22 - prompts inspection - 35 miles from cleveland

Past problems The plant experienced numerous safety problems several years ago, causing the NRC to monitor its safety operations every three months in 2005, when the plant was forced to shut down briefly because of problems with pumps that circulate coolant through the reactor's core.In March 2010, a small fire broke out in a water pump's lubrication system at the plant. The fire burned for several hours, and two members of the plant's fire brigade were taken to a hospital for heat stress. In addition to the safety problems, regulators have identified concerns over poor procedures and "human performance" issues" at the plant during the past two years, NRC public affairs officer Viktoria Mitlyng told msnbc.com.

Perry Plant distance from Cleveland is approx

36 1/2 miles. It is 21 miles from me...... too close

http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/nuclear/state_profiles/ohio/oh.html     there are two plants in Ohio, the other is in Sandusky

and another one 3 1/2 hrs away Piqua power plant, was shut down and was only in operation for three years.

[Piqua was the site chosen in 1957 by the Atomic Energy Commission to build the world’s first nuclear reactor to produce electricity for a city.]

http://www.wdtn.com/dpp/news/local/miami/piqua-in-the-1960s-was-known-as...

------The project, funded by the federal government, was completed at at cost of $7.7 million dollars. [//]

---- Though at one point supplying the town of Piqua with up to 40% of its energy needs, the plant's reactor was permanently deactivated at the beginning of 1966 following a series of technical problems. Today its reactor vessel is permanently entombed in concrete while the associated work spaces and facilities have been turned into an office park.

Gee - is anyone else here wondering what is a safe distance from a nuclear plant?

http://modernsurvivalblog.com/nuclear/u-s-nuclear-power-plants-safe-distance/

--snip--

It is difficult to impossible to answer the question, “How far away is a safe distance from a nuclear reactor?”, so I’ve created 100 mile radius zones (200 mile diameter) around each nuclear plant to provide some visual perspective. Yellow zones are around decommissioned plants.

Remember, it’s all about the wind direction too. The prevailing winds in the U.S. are typically from west to east while normally dipping down into the south-central U.S. before bending back up the east coast. [//]

More later, Betty
