Ambassador Lilley, who researches China, Taiwan, and Korea, will speak about his most recent trip to that region and the current situation in that part of the world. From 1989 to 1991, Lilley was U.S. ambassador to the People's Republic of China, and to the Republic of Korea from 1986 to 1989. Prior to joining the American Enterprise Institute, Lilley was director of the Institute for Global Chinese Affairs at University of Maryland from 1996 to 1997 and a senior adviser from 1998 to 1999. He was also a Philip M. McKenna Visiting Scholar at Claremont McKenna College (1995). After returning from China, Lilley served as assistant secretary of defense for international affairs until 1993 and as a fellow at Harvard University (1991). Prior to being named ambassador, he was deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asian Affairs during the Reagan Administration (1985-1986). He was also director of the American Institute in Taiwan (1982-1984), a professor at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (1978-1980), and national intelligence officer for China (1975-1978). Lilley writes frequently on issues concerning the Far East and is author of several books, including "China Hands: Nine Decades of Adventure, Espionage, and Diplomacy in Asia." He earned his M.A. in international relations at George Washington University and his B.A. at Yale University. Location
