Mayor Frank G. Jackson, in conjunction with members of Cleveland City Council and several community partners, is supporting the Cleveland Division of Police in its efforts to buy back working handguns from City of Cleveland residents.
The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at the Cleveland Convention Center Service Entrance. Community partners include ArcelorMittal, Slavic Village Development Corporation, and Partnership for a Safer Cleveland, with promotional assistance from 19 Action News.
City of Cleveland residents are encouraged to bring working, unloaded handguns to the Convention Center. The first 450 citizens who turn in a gun will receive a $100 BP gas card. The gun buy-back program started with $5,000 in funding from ArcelorMittal, which was announced at a community rally in early September where Council Members Tony Brancatelli (Ward 12) and Phyllis Cleveland (Ward 5) announced support for the program. Due to overwhelming response, the location has been moved to the Convention Center so that the program could be taken citywide.
