November 29, 2012GUATAMALA - Guatemala on alert as the Santiaguito volcano (Santa  María) dumps plumes of smoke and ash over nearby communities, coating cars and houses in grey dust.

Strong eruption: The Santiaguito volcano, in western Guatemala, erupted today with “very strong,” with the release of smoke and ash at high altitudes, so the agency has recommended Meteorology restrict air traffic in the area. So far there is no need for an evacuation of the villages closest to the volcano, which is located about 227 kilometers from Guatemala City. The director of the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh), Eddy Sanchez, reported that the activity of the volcano at 2,550 meters, and located in the department of Quetzaltenango, started at about 5.30 local time (11.30 GMT ). Sanchez added that the sand and volcanic ash is dispersed within at least a 4 kilometers radius of the volcano. “There is a crater collapse, pyroclastic flows, and notice has already been given to Civil Aviation to restrict air operations in that region,” said the director of the local radio Insivumeh. He also reported they warned the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conrad) to take the necessary precautions. Sanchez said the eruption of Santiaguito will last for several hours and urged people to stock up surrounding drinking water because the sand and volcanic ash can contaminate streams that may be harmful to health. The sand and ash has fallen in populations of the departments of Quetzaltenango and Retalhuleu, where they can be affected coffee plantations, according to Sanchez. The volunteer fire departments of these two departments have declared orange alert or prevention, while experts Conrad Insivumeh and keep a constant eye on the evolution of the eruption. -EFE  (translated)

227 kilometers from Guatemala City, while I am pretty closeto GC

Haven't even seen any plumes today. It was a bit overcast this morning and I needed a jacket, but as usualy it warmed up and we had the normal bright, bright blue sky. I do enjoy that!

I am still settling in, telling all my credit cards and banks it is not fraud if I make a transaction in Guatemala, going twice a week to banks as you can only cash $200 in American Express traveler's checks and only withdraw about the equivalent of $250 in Q's, the local currency. It took me about three days to get bill paying set up online for one of my accounts with 5/3, talking to many people, each saying something different.

I was in a bakery/chocolatier/deli/restaurant today and was delighted to find Noni teabags (I had already bought Noni tablets in Panama but haven't found them in Guatemala) and Turkish fig leaves tea bags, both are supposed to be extremely healthy.

I hope I will fairly soon have the time to upload two short movies I took of the two fountains that run in this complex, one right outside my door, and maybe take one of my little wire-haired dachshund running around nose to the ground. He really enjoys all the scents and is hot on the trail. There are a number of dogs here, one little white poodle was all over him trying to get him to play and he ignored her for the scents. However, he went crazy the other night and was about to break the door down. I opened it and the brother-in-law of the apartment next door to mine was holding a fluffy little dog in his arms that Brody adored.

I invited them in, and we had a long chat. The brother-in-law, like many, speaks excellent English. He is a self-described geek and when I showed him the Raspberry Pi had had finally received just before I left for Guatemala he was exstatic and declared that that had to be his Christmas present. I can't use it yet as I lack a 5v adapter and something else, I forget what. I also have to buy an external monitor. I didn't ship mine. I think even with paying 50% customs duty it will be cheaper to buy one from Amazon during CyperMonday week than to buy one here, I thought the ones I looked at when took a trip to Guatemala City were too expensive.

My email address is my yahoo address and I have been using Magic Jack to talk to my sister in Louisville and friends in Cleveland, it works quite well.
