Covering History: Revisiting Federal Art in Cleveland (1933-1943)

(Cleveland, OH) Cleveland Artists Foundation (CAF) is hosting an Opening Reception for the important new exhibit, "Covering History: Revisiting Federal Art in Cleveland (1933-1943)" on Friday, September 15, 6:00pm-9:00pm at its gallery, 17801 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood. Curated by CAF's Executive Director, Sharon Dean Ph.D., the exhibit showcases Northeast Ohio as a nationally important center for federally-funded art of the WPA era. It features educational and public health WPA posters from the Ernest Bohn Collection at Case Western Reserve University and from the Library of Congress; storytelling ceramics from the collections of the Cleveland Public Library, Lakewood Schools, and Cleveland Heights Schools; prints and drawings by African-American artists from the Jelliffe Collection of the Karamu Workshop, in the collections of Cleveland State University; and WPA and Federal Art Project prints from the Lakewood Schools, Case Western Reserve University, and the Cleveland Public Library. An extensive catalog, co-published with the Cleveland Public Library, extends the exhibition into the community by identifying WPA-era art in public buildings throughout northeastern Ohio. The exhibit runs from September 8, 2006 to November 25, 2006. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 1:00pm-5:00pm.
