Finally we have a Bazille. The tragic hero of the young impressionists he lost his life in the Franco Prussian war just before his 29th birthday in 1870. Also a talented pianist Frederick Bazille shared a flat with Auguste Renoir whose portrait he painted in 1867. And now that portrait of his friend Renoir belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The gift that keeps on giving
The mysterious Marlatts, William and Julia, about whom little is known, bequest in 1939 made possible the purchase of many of CMA's most celebrated works. Which include Cole's View of Florence, Jacob Lawrence's Fulton and Nostrand, Ruben's portrait of Isabella Brant and Thomas Cole's Twilight in the Wilderness and NOW almost a century after their passing Frederick Bazille's portrait of his friend the very young Auguste Renoir.
