Sex, drugs, and rock n roll.....the life in Cleveland that perpetuates the underground criminal industry....remains alive and well right under your nose in Cleveland. Christopher Evans of the Plain Dealer wrote an article in the Opinion section of Wednesday, April 04, 2012's newspaper called, "A slice of Cleveland's low life". The article and the comments on Cleveland.com's website are great reflections of the often unspoken truth about our 2nd District community at large: Prostitution. This article reflects that sex, specifically street prostitution of women is one of the reasons that the 'West Side of Cleveland is "SO POPULAR" and downplays all those fancy new restaurants or bands that perform in our community. The comments thereafter range from legalizing prostitution to both contemptuous and compassionate people stating their positions about such a tough subject matter. Directly across from this article on the same page under "Letters" is a note from Krissie Wells of Cleveland regarding "Ohio City's Compassion"....She truly speaks profoundly about the "Classism and Racism" that attempts to rule the community via their outspoken minority (Leadership) positions in the community...and she empoweringly reminds the public at large: "Don't let the outspoken minority, who speak with an underlying tone of racism and classism, lead you to believe otherwise." Without it being cited, ultimately she is discussing violations of the FEDERAL FAIR HOUSING LAWS REGARDING "STEERING" out the less desirables from certain classist neighborhoods like Ohio City via the Community development people who support/don't support housing projects like the Emerald XIII Permanent Supportive Housing. (EDEN Housing predominantly serves the mental health population.) While "Lorain Avenue" is known these days for lots of prostitution-it appears to serve the "men seeking women" population. Apparently, the writer did not get exposed to the prolific side of prostitution encompassed by the "Male to male" populace on Detroit Avenue and at all those wonderful places around the near west side...including some of the most elitist locations. Exceptionally intriguing to this article is the discussion regarding the "Johns" who solicit the sex....and the comical statement regarding their "Inventive lying"....specifically the suburbinate married men. The lies of this world lead to so much more like the "Spread of disease", divorce, and other destructive forces like theft, abuse, and devaluated self worth of the prositutes. Imagine the dire need for intervention and mental health support for this group at large. Imagine the statistics of this industry that support federal grants for more cops on the streets and much more. What a cycle! While most commenters seem to want the police to focus on the white collar crime of corruption; our local police continue to battle this archaic industry locally. Sadly, many of the people enslaved into this industry are the indigent, less educated, and addicted individuals who are codependent on this resolve to afford their own survival. How do the local leadership conquer such dynamics? Do they continue to battle it against the odds so as to raise revenues through fines for our city? Is this how our City leadership is underhandedly affording its own survival in this economy(retaining revenues from johns and prostitutes)? Curious thoughts come to mind regarding this big business in NEO. Is legalizing this industry a possibility that this City would entertain after legalizing gambling here? Prayers for all the victims, people and enslaved populace who remain entrenched in this industry for whatever reasons. May humanity remain with you during the challenges you endure.

The rampant sex trade in NEO is part of the economy that concerns me, as well, and I am at least grateful that the Plain Dealer broached the topic--especially as it has become a priority crime to address under Governor Kasich.
There has also been some attempt to shed light on the disappearance of young girls like Gina DeJesus, Amanda Berry and so many others--most likely abducted and sold into the child sex trafficking corridor acknowledged to center around Toledo.
Dianna references a letter--here's the text:
After graduating from a master's program at Case Western Reserve University, I left my cozy apartment in Cleveland Heights and moved to Ohio City on Cleveland's Near West Side. It is important for me to live in Cleveland proper.
Recently, the neighborhood has experienced tension between those who oppose the Emerald XIII Permanent Supportive Housing that will be built on Lorain Avenue and those who believe Ohio City should welcome all kinds of people, regardless of socioeconomic status. I find myself in the latter group for a variety of reasons, the first and foremost being very simple: compassion and love. I haven't been bought off by any councilperson, nor do I have any stake in Ohio City Inc. I simply believe that providing services to those who need them is a societal obligation.
Ohio City has many compassionate residents. Don't let the outspoken minority, who speak with an underlying tone of racism and classism, lead you to believe otherwise.

Ohio ranked 18th among 50 states, with 3.1 cases of P&S syphilis per 100,000 persons. The number of congenital syphilis cases decreased from 6 in 1999 to 3 in 2008.
Ranked 19th among 50 states in chlamydial infections (410.9 per 100,000 persons) and ranked 10th among 50 states in gonorrheal infections (146.5 per 100,000 persons). Reported rates of chlamydia among women (596 cases per 100,000) were 3.1 times greater than those among men (194 cases per 100,000).

Mentally ill prostitutes....or mentally ill Johns?
The commenters on Cleveland.com cited "mental illness" as an underlying factor in this big business relevant to the prostitutes who are enslaved into prostitution...
Comically, the real question remains regarding the typical identity crisis or mental health of a prostitute versus a John.... Seriously.... The prostitutes are being real about what they are doing and why they do it..... most will tell the police, the judge, and the world their reasons and rhymes for engaging in such a business...mostly for survival... (pay bills, sustain drug habits, buy food for babies...) Yet, the Johns "live in lies", often lead double lives with unsuspecting wives at home, and countless Johns still live in the closet.
The reality of how less than 10 minutes of elicit exchanges could change a person's life doesn't seem significant when Johns are hot and bothered. Yet, once their family is subjected to the results of their "deviant" behavior and the humiliation of it-either through disease, arrest or being caught somehow-finally hits home...then what? Amazing how the prostitutes openly take their risks knowing full well the possible consequences; but seemingly most John's are more aroused by the idea that they are "Breaking the rules!"(instead of thinking about the other people who could get hurt to include themselves.)
So, with all due respect.... I have to beg the question---is the deviant behavior of a "John" a legitimate qualifier for being "Mentally Ill" more than that of a truthful "Prostitute"?
A simple review of some of the posted "ADS" on craigslist.org would make most people sick. The reality of the "Johns" desires is amazing and questionable to "normal society". Yet, somehow-they tend to lead the "normalist" lives....quite intriguing. Be Aware of the unsuspecting "guy next door" person who exhibits no signs of 'abnormality!"
What about the world of "Free Exchanges" shared daily by hit and skip people who simply want erotic encounters with other people who want the same thing without money? Suprisingly, you'd find that most of these typical people are from upper middle class white collar backgrounds and many wear suits to work daily....What an interesting world we all live in.......Just saying.
BTW: I cite this because as a parent---someone once remarked to me that "IT'S NOT THE ONES WHO ARE ALREADY REGISTERED OFFENDERS YOU MUST WORRY ABOUT....IT'S THE ONES WHO HAVE NOT BEEN CAUGHT YET THAT YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT!" That thought remains with me forever...
