"There are a lot of people down," said one man, whose bib No. 17528 identified him as Frank Deruyter of North Carolina.
He was not injured, but marathon workers were carrying one woman, who did not appear to be a runner, to the medical area as blood gushed from her leg. A Boston police officer was wheeled from the course with a leg injury that was bleeding.
About three hours after the winners crossed the line, there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the photo bridge that marks the finish line.
Another explosion could be heard a few seconds later.

jeff are you ok deaths serious injuries explosions at marathon
sophia honey yoga and guy -
Thanks Guy - finished before the blasts
This is a situation where it looks like they did not have dogs sniffing for explosives. A big screw up for the local security folks. The Mass Bay Transit Authority has dogs on the subway, and elsewhere on the transportation system, but the explosives at the Boston Marathon finish line were not sniffed.
Crowds attract wackos - and we need our companion animal's noses to get to the bottom of this type of problem.
But - I have to comment - and I probably sound pretty callous - and my comment is - that many of the countries in which we, the United States of America - are doing our military thing - see much worse than this bomb job every day!
Right now 5:04 pm, they are announcing on the local radio WBUR that cell phones service may be shut down to prevent other devices from being remotely detonated. That's a problem. When you need your communication, it is shut off. Looks like another serious weakness...
Thank God I ran with my gun...
Just kidding, but I am not kidding about the fact that my cell phone is not able to function because the local cell system is overwhelmed. Where are the regulations from the FCC which require a depth of cell channel supply? This is a joke.
If we really had any type of serious military situation - invasion -etc - our communications systems would be useless.
WTF?
BBC has video of first explosion

No cell phone in crisis-Jeff glad you are okay
This is just another sad day for a country that refuses to address a Community Emergency Response system that protects communities. Glad you are okay.
