Search Engine for Public Domain Images

Have you ever wanted to find public domain images that you can use for your blog posts or other creative projects? Have you ever used the "right click" approach to save images for some use only to wonder later if your use (school project, blog posting, collage, non-profit use) was within the intent of the owner of that intellectual property?

You must visit Yotophoto, "a search engine for free-to-use stock photographs and images. These are images that are either in the Public Domain or released under generous Creative Commons, GNU FDL or similar licenses." The company describes its mission as "to help people locate, remix and republish open and copyleft images. We aren't just about 'free stock photos' for designers, but also about helping educators, bloggers and digital artists find photos they can use without fear of "the man"." Interestingly, the site is based on Drupal, the same open source content management system that powers RealNEO.

I found the image above by searching for "Cleveland."  The photo is by Skippy13 and can be found here on Flickr. The terms of its particular Creative Commons license allow me to use it as long as I provide attribution to the photographer.

I am in the process of doing research on resources for public domain images but I thought this one was so unique that I had to share it right now. If any readers know of other sources for these images, please post them in the comments.

156 images found using the phrase: cleveland

Great insight on the great open source world, and great folks like us pushing the Drupal envelope... I added Yotophoto to my Firefox search menu bar and did a search for photos of Cleveland and found 156 - I'll be using this a lot... the developers of this are in BC and friends.

Also check out our friends OurMedia

More great open source rich content management is happening at OurMedia.org, with our friends in BC providing drupal infrastructure and other friends in SF providing custom modules... when this first launched it was on the same server in BC as REALNEO and both sites ground to a hault - now it seems to be flowing great.

Another Source for Public Domain Images

Hope you don't mind if I share another spot where you can find lots of public domain images.  They're from my collection of old books, magazines, and postcards. You can find them at http://karenswhimsy.com/public-domain-images/. Thanks.
