IS THIS SIDEWALK ART OR WHAT? MAY BE A MAP OF IRELAND?

Well, what you are seeing in the attached two photographs is something I observed when I was taking a walk around Jefferson Park on my way to the tennis courts.

They are a bunch of leaves lying on the north sidewalk adjoining Lorain Avenue.

And they have been arranged, by the wind, in an abstract pattern – very much like the map of a country or state.

My late wife would have immediately remarked: “Oh! Jesus, Mary, and the wee donkey -- that’s a map of Ireland – here’s Derry, here’s Belfast, here’s Dublin -----.” She was from Derry in the north.

The observation in the first photograph was made on November 13, 2020 at 3:45 p.m. and in the second photograph the very next day around the same time (3:53 p.m. to be exact). Both days were very pleasant with temperature in the high 40’s (deg. F).

For over a month I had been observing the change in the colors of the autumn leaves as documented in a recent post:
“Autumn Gold, 2020 – In and Around Jefferson Park”.

And I was literally up to my ears in leaves – leaves in trees which were reminders of art in nature where nature had used sunlight and the weather (cold temperatures at night) to transform green leaves in to brilliant yellow colors – shining like gold.

And here was nature again – using the wind to blow the leaves in to abstract patterns on the ground that were very pleasing to the eye – similar to what wind does to sand in the deserts forming dunes with pleasing forms – as the second photograph (right side) shows a view (obtained from the Internet) of the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado.

In the second photograph – taken nearly 24-hours later -- the pattern had changed – but somehow the wind had not been strong enough to blow all the leaves away. The change was a reminder that on our planet (nearly 4.5 billion years old) – the outline of the continents has been constantly changing.

Of course on the third day – there was wind and rain – and nature’s artwork was nowhere to be seen.

What I saw was nature at work – using wind to rearrange leaves on the ground in to patterns that were pleasing to the eye.

If an artist were to do it – the artwork could merit display in an art gallery or museum – and if the artist were to make a name, the dollars would start rolling in.

Enjoy the rest of the week. Winter is officially arriving on Monday, December 21.
