03.08.05 NOTES: Tuesday@REI - Sustainability of sustainability - Bruce Latimer WOWs

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 03/08/2005 - 16:45.

WOW - WOW - WOW – Draft Notes - I stepped in late to Natural History
Director Bruce Latimer's talk on sustainability of sustainability with sobering
insight from a biologist on evolution of man, that we are on a run away train
headed toward the abyss, that termites are more important to the Earth than
humans, that we are all Africans, that man is hard wired to compete, and that
odds are 60/40% against the survival of humanity. He is not hopeful mankind -
man unkind - will survive more than the next few generations. He sees the only
hope of human survival is that we hijack our hard wiring to compete with
economic reward for doing the right things - getting together like we are today
and talk about the problems and find the right solutions - and we must do that
at a global level. China will not decide they want less than Americans and we
already need 4 planets Earth to support what we already consume.

The Bottom Line: Backup Child Care Strengthens Businesses

Submitted by RWaxman-Lenz on Sun, 03/06/2005 - 22:54.

I am a senior-level manager who has a meeting with a major client. One of my staff responsible for the meeting calls in sick. The truth is that her son’s caretaker is out sick. My employee’s child care support breaks down, so I will be left with a dissatisfied client. This scenario is more common than one would think. According to an article in the February issue of CFO magazine, a survey conducted by the National Conference of State Legislatures found that child care problems force 80 percent of employees to miss work. According to the Child Care Action Campaign, U.S. companies have losses of about $3 billion each year resulting from employee child care arrangements breaking down. “On average, working mothers lose eight-and-a-half days per year, and fathers lose five days annually. The result is lower productivity, stalled projects, and higher turnover.

First Monday: The social structure of free and open source software development

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 03/06/2005 - 16:20.

The social structure of free and open source software development - by Kevin Crowston and James Howison - Abstract: Metaphors, such as the Cathedral and Bazaar, used to describe the organization of FLOSS projects typically place them in sharp contrast to proprietary development by emphasizing FLOSS's distinctive social and communications structures. But what do we really know about the communication patterns of FLOSS projects? How generalizable are the projects that have been studied? Is there consistency across FLOSS projects? Questioning the assumption of distinctiveness is important because practitioner-advocates from within the FLOSS community rely on features of social structure to describe and account for some of the advantages of FLOSS production.

First Monday: analysis of the mainstream media representation of hackers, hacking, hacktivism, and cyberterrorism

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 03/06/2005 - 16:12.

The media's portrayal of hacking, hackers, and hacktivism
before and after September 11
- The intensified
national debate on the security of cyberspace after September 11,
2001 negatively influenced online political activism, which is now
forced to defend itself against being labeled as a form of
cyberterrorism. Many of these socially or politically progressive
activities remain unknown to the public, or if reported, they are
presented in a negative light in the mass media. These conclusions
are based on a analysis of of hackers, hacking, hacktivism, and
cyberterrorism in five major U.S. newspapers over a one-year
period.

REALNEO has become as big as Northeast Ohio - here's a current overview

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 02/26/2005 - 04:01.

Over the past few months, REALNEO has grown from a proof
of concept, that Northeast Ohioans could embrace social networking, to become a
network of over 50 unique social networks impacting the entire region. In the
process, the REALNEO concept has been embraced by all community leaders
familiar with this initiative, recognizing dialogue and inclusion is critical
to the economic development of this region. Such proactive and responsive
leaders are now driving REALNEO development forward by forming more social
networks, called "Community Of Interest Links" (COILs), which are all
rooted at http://realneo.us. Read on for a
brief overview of the COILS under development, both private and public, with
links to each. For more information on any of these COILs, contact Norm Roulet

Libraries Contribute to Youth Development

Submitted by RWaxman-Lenz on Thu, 02/24/2005 - 21:44.

You might not think of a public library as the "in" place to be, but some teenagers do! The Chapin Hall Center for Children at the University of Chicago reports on ideas being developed for new roles that public libraries can play in developing our youth. Here's what they say: "With growing numbers of teenagers visiting libraries to socialize, do homework, and use computers as well as the Internet, libraries have found themselves pressed to address the needs of this group. Although nearly a fourth of library patrons are teenagers, libraries traditionally have devoted less of their space, personnel, and financial resources to services for teens than to any other age group. An evaluation of the Public Libraries as Partners in Youth Development, a nine site demonstration project funded by the Wallace Foundation, suggests that communities should take a closer look at the role that public libraries can play in strengthening the skills of teenagers, building the capacity of libraries as institutions, and connecting libraries more closely to communities. The study suggests that library-based youth programs, especially in low- income communities, can teach teens specific job skills at the same time that they make libraries more visible assets in the community." Broad coalition supports Community Internet NEO needs - Central Ohio Legislator opposes

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Thu, 02/24/2005 - 00:08.

Case's Weatherhead School of Management Center for Regional Economic Issues (REI) and other community leaders support an initiative to distribute used computers and ease access to free or low cost Internet access for area residents in financial hardship. The first community being supported through this vision is East Cleveland, where REI drives ECHO - "Extending Community Home Online" - as part of an East Cleveland 2010 community redevelopment initiative. This effort is not in social service for the poor of East Cleveland but a critical initiative for economic development for this entire NEO region.

Area leaders focusing on Early Childhood Development, for healthcare and the economy

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 02/21/2005 - 01:10.

The Center for Regional Economic Issues promotes the understanding economic development begins with the unborn child, and many area community leaders realize effective early childhood development improves the economy. Two recent benefits of this enlightenment are a community of interest called NEOchildhood, pursuing a wide range of childhood development related opportunities for Northeast Ohio, and NEOBEAN, creating the Northeast Ohio Breastfeeding Education and Advocacy Network - all for parents, family, employers, policymakers, educators, researchers, caregivers and ultimately children. Good work!.Â

Who owns you? Definitely ChoicePoint! Perhaps Con-Men. Suddenly 1984 looks good.

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 02/21/2005 - 00:00.

In October 2004 the personal identity aggregator and broker ChoicePoint was defrauded and gave con-men access to 100,000s of Americans' records - 1,000,000s of records - perhaps your social security number, and financial history, and medical files. You wouldn't know, unless you've experienced irregularities - ChoicePoint chose not to notify their victims, except in California, where state legislators have had the wisdom to require their citizens are notified of such fraud... but even there it took four months for ChoicePoint to mail notice to those 35,000 victims. If this sounds pathetic, it is. More pathetic is that we allow companies like ChoicePoint to aggregate and broker our personal identities. Is this what you want? Read on and realize this is not what you want. Keep visiting REALNEO to learn the alternatives... coming soon.

Social networking against society? Who wants to own your dreams and aspirations?

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 02/09/2005 - 23:56.

The following posting from Good Morning Silicon Valley surfaces a critical issue in social computing and in fact information technology - who owns your data. There is a social network called "43 things" that has attracted interest from people wanting to share their dreams and aspirations. The problem is that Amazon.com invested in 43 Things, so who owns whose dreams and aspirations? Read about this issue and the history of 43 things here, and decide for youself. REALNEO does not want to own your dreams but to make your aspirations more useful for you - read on about what Amazon has in mind for you...

The Entitlement of Voting

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Sat, 02/05/2005 - 23:06.

The “right to vote, the subject of nonviolent protests, bloody confrontations and solemn pronouncements by Supreme Courts and Congress for centuries, is very much in doubt. Like a desert mirage, the image of an effective election, with widespread, universal voting looms before us, but always out of reach. In a practical manner, the right to vote is defined, not by the United States Constitution or the lives lost to ensure a vote, but by the amount of money legislators, Governors and other state officials are willing to spend to implement fair elections.  The President and Congress should treat the right to vote as a full entitlement, guaranteed by the Constitution, and provide the money needed to ensure accurate elections.

Strong Environmental Policies Generate Economic Leadership

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Wed, 02/02/2005 - 09:02.

This morning’s PD cited a Michigan research paper that concluded that economic cars, hybrids and the like, will generate a stronger economic return for European manufacturers, who have adapted to meet the more aggressive, European environmental standards and are now poised to reap the economic benefit of this growing market in the US. As a result, the study says, the US government should assist, despite the current $400+ billion budget deficit, in the retrofit/reengineering of the US plants to be able to compete. Of course, the industry could have also asked for assistance in meeting the environmental demands decades ago to seize the leadership mantel now held by European manufacturers, but for decades, US auto industry opposed stronger environmental standards, rather than adapt. Another significant, unmentioned lesson also warrants noting: Sound environmental policy, environmental leadership, can generate economic leadership in a very short time.
