CQ Politics - He may yet turn out to be the avatar of Iranian democracy, but three decades ago Mir-Hossein Mousavi was waging a terrorist war on the United States that included bloody attacks on the U.S. embassy and Marine Corps barracks in Beirut.
Mousavi, prime minister for most of the 1980s, personally selected his point man for the Beirut terror campaign, Ali Akbar Mohtashemi-pur, and dispatched him to Damascus as Iran's ambassador, according to former CIA and military officials. Read more.

People seem to be confused on what is a democracy and what are civil liberties. There is not a two party systems there are two candidates and neithers a civil libertarian. Neither is pro-west, both would be subjected to the “supreme council” and that council is proclaiming itself as divinely inspired and guided.
What is happening in Iran is political unrest, and it is conjuring on civil liberties and using the legitimacy of democratic choice as a lever. They want change, they want freedom…who doesn’t !
The point of contention with the west is that of freedoms and civil liberties, as Iran is today it is inherently at odds with the west’s ideal of liberty and freedom. It leaders are and it people are not, all people want total freedom, most have a misconception as to the extent of that potentially. The opposite of anarchy is totalitarianism.
The west sees religion as personal and a choice.
In Iran the supreme council is interpreting ancient scriptures and believe as theologians they have the real truth. In the end guidance is only that; it is your ass in the end if you do not take it; its their ass if they attempt to force it on you.
The faith does not need to be law, but people should keep it, the faith that is.
faith?
Oengus, It is only a choice because the founders of this country made it a base of the bill of rights. Remember prayer is school? The debate over abortion is a religion based arguement based on intrepertations of ancient scriptures.
During the last presidential race, the specter of is he or isn't he a Christian surfaced early.
The mid-east has long established beliefs and practices. If those who live there choose to continue their heritage and culture, it is not up to the west to limit it or overthrow the government there. The "west" needs to let the people who live there decide how they will be governed. Yes, a fair election needs to happen, but it is not up to "us" to make the calls.
You need to expand your "news" sources.
