Lake Erie Pollution Observations From a 4 year old - Brown City Dead Lake Vol. 1
Submitted by Zebra Mussel on Sat, 02/24/2007 - 21:49.
I just uploaded the latest in a series of ultra-low-rez pollution centric "shock and awe" videos. Surf into Buckeye Sustainability Institute's blog, see the aerial photo of Sims Park, and watch the video of the pollution spewing out of an outfall there, a dead fish, and my 4 year old daughters observations.

"shock and awe" exactly what NEO needs
Really great to see documentation of such an environmental mess - is the rest of the series available? Imagine how much more public concern and action we would see if an army of people captured and organized on-line videos of all the ecological problems - stream Mittal.

Sounds like that didn't happen and I wonder who made all the cash on the deal. Very interesting. Thanks for taking this, I am going to pass it on to other Euclid residents.

I replied and let them know the fish kill video BSI shot this summer at the same park is going to be uploaded next. Its in the editing room. And its not shot with a cell phone.

Another child's observations ...
I was driving home with my step-daughter last night and she asked why it stinks by our house (we live on the north edge of Ohio City). I told her it was probably the sewage treatment plant just north of us, or the lake (with sewage in it), but sometimes when the wind is right the bad smell is coming from the Mittal steel mill.
thanks for the video ZM
I can't wait to see the next video. I have looked for video or even photos of crap flowing into our lake and tributaries with no results. I want to find a video of a rain event when the recognizable solid waste is flowing along with it, too. I am hoping that Jeff and I can get out our map the next time we have a good rain and head off to the Doan Brook or another spot and tape and photo some of this activity. It is difficult even to convince Case physics professors that we have combined sewers in Cleveland. All I have ever found are pics of the outfalls when they are dry, but I saw them in action while rowing the upper Cuyahoga a few summers ago in the rain.
OOoo yeah flowing into the
OOoo yeah flowing into the river on the Cuyahoga near the mouth... or at least into the navigable channel. One of my favorite outfalls in the city is there... its about big enough to drive a semi into, has old railroad bridge in front of it, and it is made out of beautiful red brick.
We need to get the real neo enviro team out on the river this summer. What if we chartered the Holiday... for a kegger river cruise and sunset out on the lake? I see that boat with like 15-20 on it alot, it cant be that expensive... I should look into it. That is zee way to see our city (by driving a boat up its sewer, i mean river). Just ask Sudhir... we took a little float trip this past summer... it was rad. I always see dozens of what my dad use to call 'white city white bass'. White City is a reference to a beach next to easterly waste water treatment plant. white sand, enclosed by a breakwall. I call them Trojan fish myself. The telltale sign of combined sewers... floating plastic.
I think we can do a lot of good by just putting out some vivid imagery. I have scads but am working on some new angles and collaborative processes.
Thanks Susan for the positivity!
I have floated by the Doan Brooks outfall into Lake Erie a number of times. I believe it is channelized into a pipe that flows under Dike 13 (which is full of ultra nasty, haz soils). In the near future I hope to show some photos of what it looks like on real neo, etc.

I used to swim in the lake with my dog - her hair fell off
I once rented a house in Bay Village in the lake so I was really drawn to it - we could walk to the little public access point by Columbia Road so I took a chance - believe the hype - it's getting clean so enjoy... it certainly can look beautiful in the sunrise and sunset when other colors make it not look at all blue (never saw that) but red and orange...
So I'd take my dog and we'd go in an play around. I notices there was some kind of pipe outlet there but never considered that would be sewage (don't know that for a fact). The more exciting the weather, the more exciting the lake - nothing like a good storm to stir up some surf and make swiming fun. Then the dog lost her hair and it occurred to me that the water did burn when I went in.
So I suggest taking a look at there - Columbia and Lake - by the church - not holy.
