Education is power. The fight for educational equality has been an ever-evolving struggle. Many youth of color continue to be segregated in crowded and under-funded schools or pushed into the juvenile justice system. Meanwhile, books by African American authors that highlight inequality have been banned or challenged in many libraries, classrooms, and communities, often because of concerns that they will "inspire racial tensions."

Community leaders, including popular Cleveland radio personality Basheer Jones and local playwright Michael Oatman, will read with passion from select works by these treasured African American intellectuals and writers. ACLU of Ohio Board Member and moderator Gary Williams will weave these passages together with commentary. This program is an always inspiring and moving celebration of the written word in African American culture. Watch www.acluohio.org for names of other speakers as they are confirmed.

Banned Brilliance is part of Banned Books Week, the celebration of the freedom to read, which was launched in response to a surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries.
