Child DevelopmentDISTANT RELATIVES – WE MEET ON THANKSGIVINGSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 11/22/2007 - 18:55.
This morning when I was out with Tucker (the dog) this deer got his attention. Tucker stood still and stared at the deer, and the deer stood still, while slow-motion lifting his front left leg up and down to softly stomp his hoof on the leaves.

SEARCHING FOR CLEVELAND'S SOULSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 10/15/2007 - 10:20.
About a month ago a hapless judge in Cleveland, under intense pressure from a community posse, sentenced two young men to 2000 hours of community service (no affirmation intended/rebutted re: Planetizen viewpoint) to be served over 5 years.

CAMERAS SHOOT MAYOR JACKSON AND DR. SANDERSSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 10/12/2007 - 16:52.
City of Cleveland Mayor Jackson and Cleveland Metropolitan School District Superintendent Eugene Sanders held a “news conference” in the Mayor’s Chambers this afternoon. The security magnetometer at the Mayor’s City Hall second floor office suite doorway sensed metal (my camera?) and buzzed when I went in, but it buzzed for everyone. No one was minding it. Anyway, I’m sure there was not any concealed carry in the City Hall because the yellow sign on the front door of the City Hall said “guns not allowed”.

CIVIC SPACE IS EQUITY BASEDSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 09/16/2007 - 11:33.
I have been attending and photographing events at each end of the NEO citizen spectrum. What I mean is that I have attended Cuyahoga County Commissioner's meetings - which I would propose is one of many events at the top of what I'll define as the "civic pyramid", and I’ve gone to classes with individual citizens at the Shaker Lakes Regional Nature Center (the raccoon rabies bait story is centered around the Nature Center woods) -which I propose to define as one of many citizen events at the base, the foundation, of the "civic pyramid". Another example of an event at the top of the "civic pyramid" would be the Cuyahoga County Wind Energy Task Force meeting which was held at the Key Center September 13 and which I will post about shortly. And another example of an event at the foundation of the pyramid is instructor Donald Isom’s (on left in "Rehab is for Quiters" shirt) weekly Krump at the Heights Youth Club pictured above.

Heard Bobby tonight at 3C - heard him in the 60's too. We need leadership like his today in Cleveland. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr. Seale addressed a crowd of several hundred at Cuyahoga Community College Saturday evening. I remember well the Black Panther Party from the 1960’s. Mr. Seale remembers it well too. Mr. Seale's visit was sponsored by the Sara J. Harper Leadership Institute. Retired Hon. J. Harper was at the podium to introduce the evening’s program.

My Ideal Presidential CandidateSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Sun, 08/05/2007 - 08:14.
Who's my candidate, the pollster asks? I will pledge to support what ever candidate does more to make the world hate America less. At the outset, I want to say how truly appalled I am at myself for having such an abysmal standard for evaluating candidates. How can I tolerate, much less espouse, such a bleak, cynical prism to separate the candidates? Yet, I am more troubled by America and an America political system that is content to operate in denial.
KRUMP DANCING IS COOLSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 07/31/2007 - 13:43.
I have been following a thread on BrewedFreshDaily concerning Michael Polensek’s radical letter – and whether recreation centers might make a difference to our kids Mr. Polensek’s ward has been promising to build a youth rec center for about 17 years but can’t seem to get it done.

Starting shortly, operation of the Inner Circle will expand to extended hours every day, featuring a cybercafe, meeting space, computer terminals, free wifi, independent film, the Linux Cafe, art, culture, and great food, coffee, and even wine tastings, via a broader partnership of friends. FRANCE IN THE NEWSSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 05/18/2007 - 13:11.
When I was traveling a number of years ago in Santorini, Greece with a young woman I still know, I had an experience that doesn’t happen much in this country. We were eating dinner in a small bistro when volla! The waiter came to our table with a bottle of wine and two glasses, filled the glasses and left the bottle – announcing that the wine was “compliments to the lady” from two men at another table. That was great!
The Rap on CultureSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 05/16/2007 - 11:21.
It is good to see just released the latest research report from Policy Bridge, which explores: "How Anti-Education Messages in Media, at Home, & on the Street Hold Back African-American Youth". They contend "that institutional policy changes cannot succeed without addressing lifestyle factors that derail far too many black youth – boys in particular – from the surest path toward economic well-being: education." Policy Bridge is a think tank directed by Timothy Goler, who I got to know when he was acting economic development director in East Cleveland. This report is found at their website, here. It seems to do a good job of surfacing many issues and proposing solutions not now part of our dialog. There are other similar issues that make education more complex than it seems.
MAKE EDUCATION (LOVE) - NOT WARSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 05/15/2007 - 14:18.
"My Son K.I.A Iraq" is a traveling Activist. I didn't hear the presentation in the nearby church, so I don't know if the "son" is personal, or a generalization. The pick up truck ...with a flag drapped coffin, empty boots, ... and the trailer with crutches and crosses - just the stuff Bush keeps under wraps... is an appropriate follow up to Mothers' Day 2007.

Martin Varsavsky, founder of FON, and author of his "Blog of an Entrepreneur", posted there an interesting letter he sent to all his employees: "FON is Dropping Microsoft, Adopting Ubuntu". I had seen, on some of his earlier blog entries, that Martin had a major Windows crash and lost his whole hard drive (been there) and so after 20 years with Microsoft he switched to Ubuntu (done that) and also Apple - after a month he settled on Ubuntu. It has been fascinating reading Martin's celebration of discovering FOSS - I remember having the same awakening. It is very exciting to now see Martin move his company FOSS, and to highlight how he is doing this and why - read his personal account here... and think about how this could be happening all over NEO...

ECOSSystem - Extending Community Open Source SystemSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 04/25/2007 - 17:20.
While not currently a powerhouse in Free Open Source Software (FOSS), Northeast Ohio is positioned to begin excelling with FOSS in some very strategic ways that may add great value to the regional economy. Because of FOSS, we may now bridge the digital divide more quickly and completely here than has any other large urban center in America, we may soon have the highest percentage of workforce properly educated for the new economy, and we may lead the world in some fields of application development and technology innovation with global, open standards, all if the region now embraces FOSS..
