There is probably no need for Planners to consider this for Cleveland's downtown; however, this may be the way to help struggling neighborhoods within the city, as well as the the older, inner-ring suburbs - by encouraging pedestrian activity instead of vehicular.
I suppose the fast-food industry would put up a big fight to keep things as they have been.

No Free Lunches: Pharmaceutical Industry Influences Physicians with Food, Flattery and Friendship

On October 19th, at 5:00 p.m. Dr. Lex will examine the influence of the
drug industry on the ethical practice of medicine in a lecture titled
“No Free Lunches: Pharmaceutical Industry Influences Physicians
with Food, Flattery and Friendship.” According to Dr. Lex,
heavy-duty salesmanship by pharmaceutical vendors, accompanied by
luxurious marketing perks, threatens to compromise the patient-doctor
relationship and may subject physicians prescribing drugs to
conflict-of-interest charges. This talk will be especially
valuable to students with an interest in health care law and medical
careers and to lawyers who represent the drug companies that are
engaged in such marketing activities.

In the past nine years, Dr. Lex has presented over 100 lectures in
academic, legal and medical settings throughout Europe and North and
South America. A graduate of the University of Texas Health
Science Center, he served his internship and residency at the Thomas
Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He is a member of
the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, a member of the Physicians
for a National Health Plan and a Fellow of the American Academy of
Emergency Medicine. He is the recipient of the Presidential Unit
Citation for Valorous Action in Vietnam, the Combat Medic Badge for
Service in Vietnam, the American Academy of Emergency Medicine James
Keaney Award for outstanding contributions to the AAEM and many other
honors.

The last few weeks have seen the subject of education reach front and center across Northeast Ohio. Public school funding, the end of the BBB era and the hyper-politicizing of the selection of her successor, and the realization we need progress educating the region's children are all important drivers for discussion. The NEO Excellence Roundtable has maintained an ongoing dialogue on such key issues impacting economic development in Northeast Ohio, which we will broaden beginning at the August 16th session.

04.13.05 City Club: how intelligence, education and wealth contribute to disparate health outcomes

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Fri, 04/08/2005 - 13:16.
04/13/2005 - 06:30

How do personal characteristics such as
intelligence, education and wealth contribute to disparate health outcomes?

Linda S. Gottfredson, Ph.D., professor
of education at the University of Delaware, and co-director of the
Delaware-Johns Hopkins Project for the Study of Intelligence and Society, will
discuss this and related issues at the next program in the lecture series,
"Prescriptions for Change: Reducing Health Disparities in Our Community,"
presented by the Roundtable Community Council, a program of the Greater
Cleveland Partnership, and the Center for Health Disparities, a collaboration
between MetroHealth Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University.

The program will be held from 7:30-9:30 a.m., Wed., April 13, at The
City Club of Cleveland, 850 Euclid Avenue. It is sponsored by the St. Luke's and
Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundations. Tickets are $15 for City Club members and
nonmembers.

Dr.
Gottfredson has written extensively on the impact of general intelligence on
personal functioning in different life domains, including in school, on the job
and in health self-care. Among her recent publications is an article in Current Directions in Psychological
Science,

co-written in 2004 with Ian J. Deary of the University of
Edinburgh (Scotland), examining the theory that intelligence (as measured by an
IQ-type test) enhances individuals' care of their own health, because it
represents learning, reasoning and problem-solving skills useful in preventing
chronic disease and accidental injury and in adhering to complex treatment
regimens.

Thank you Tom Brazaitis - you are missed - rest in peace

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Thu, 03/31/2005 - 23:02.
In 1999, a journalist at the Cleveland Plain Dealer named Tom Brazaitis published an article asking what his readers thought about his paper? I was intrigued - it never occurred to me newspaper journalists cared what readers thought. I called him and left a voice mail message to comment - he called back to discuss my thoughts and he asked me to email them to him - I sent back a lengthy assessment of that Sunday's publication. Not only did he care what I thought, but he published some excerpts of my message,
along with other readers' perspectives.

Knowing Tom cared about his readers, I grew to care about his work and paper, and him, and I realized his columns were always right on. He taught me journalists are normal people, doing normal jobs. He taught me being a "socialist" is not a crime. He taught me to speak my mind and write my peace. He
inspired me and changed my life.
