Friends of Northeast Ohio, a day for a new bridge to our future is arriving Thursday, November 17th, when the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) will present their plan to supplement the current I-90 Innerbelt bridge over the Cuyahoga River by building a second bridge immediately to the north of the current span. If you care about the form, flow and future of our community, you must care about this near $ billion project. The Cuyahoga County Planning Commission, area newspapers and universities, and broad community leaders all agree this project offers a great opportunity to reshape Cleveland forever. There is broad agreement we should replace the current I-90 bridge with a world-class span. In doing so, we may relocate the bridge south to allow further development around our $500 million gateway district, and create an astounding gateway entrance to our city. The historic Cleveland Harbor Coast Guard Station on Lake Erie

The people of Northeast Ohio are
fortunate to have one of the world's greatest bodies of freshwater at
our doorstep. Cleveland, being the largest metropolis on Lake Erie,
needs to leverage this great asset and realize its potential to make
Northeast Ohio a world contender. The citizens, organizations, and
public officials have begun the collaboration needed to make it
happen. The only way we can keep the momentum going to restore our
Great Lakes is to get involved and “be part of it.”

Public comments are being accepted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) on a draft plan for conserving the remaining open spaces and natural areas in the Lake Erie Region. In addition, as part of the state's efforts to meet eligibility on the federal Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program, Ohio will hold two public meetings in November to solicit feedback on the draft plan.

As dusk approached on a dreary, rainy Cleveland 1st of November, the skies suddenly cleared and around 80 diverse NEO Stakeholders gathered at the Palace Theater for a shared experience of insight from Mayor Campbell and Next Generation Consulting CEO Rebecca Ryan followed by "world cafe" collaboration. We will work with Rebecca, Bridge Builders, 20/30, cleveland.com, Mark Chupp, of CSU and "Voices and Choices", and every social and change organization and individual that is interested to make certain young thinkers' thoughts are heard in the change dialogues now gaining volume and taking center stages around the region.

There is probably no need for Planners to consider this for Cleveland's downtown; however, this may be the way to help struggling neighborhoods within the city, as well as the the older, inner-ring suburbs - by encouraging pedestrian activity instead of vehicular.
I suppose the fast-food industry would put up a big fight to keep things as they have been.

On September 22nd, the City Club packed the room with Cleveland's "establishment" and "movement" leaders to listen to the voice of Generation X (born 1961-80). Rebecca Ryan held everyone's attention for an hour with her delivery that is straight to the point with a bit of humor. One of the points that she stressed is that the established leaders and new leaders need each other to make their communities more attractive and sustainable. She also highlighted that the "quality of place" is just as important as quality of jobs when GenXers decide to remain or relocate.

In Wisconsin, new regional allliances are beginning to emerge, as civic leaders in Madison and Milwaukee recognize that they have more to gain from collaboration.

Henry Cisneros, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Develpment under President Clinton, now heads CityView, a community-building company.  CityView is dedicated to producing workforce homes in the central neighborhoods of America's urban areas by identifying sites, planning neighborhoods, acquiring and developing land, financing communities, and buiding homes.  With his wife, Mary Alice, Cisnerso is also the founder of American Sunrise, a community-based non-profit organization focused on homeownership for working families and after-school curricula for central city children.
