Friends of Northeast Ohio, a day for a new bridge to our future is arriving Thursday, November 17th, when the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) will present their plan to supplement the current I-90 Innerbelt bridge over the Cuyahoga River by building a second bridge immediately to the north of the current span. If you care about the form, flow and future of our community, you must care about this near $ billion project. The Cuyahoga County Planning Commission, area newspapers and universities, and broad community leaders all agree this project offers a great opportunity to reshape Cleveland forever. There is broad agreement we should replace the current I-90 bridge with a world-class span. In doing so, we may relocate the bridge south to allow further development around our $500 million gateway district, and create an astounding gateway entrance to our city. appointment of Christopher S. Ronayne, as the new President of
University Circle Incorporated (UCI) was announced today, November
14, at UCI’s Annual Meeting by R. Thomas Stanton, Chairman of UCI’s
Board of Trustees. Ronayne will lead the 40-member nonprofit
organization’s efforts to continue the development of University Circle
into one of the country’s premier urban districts. Ronayne is only the
seventh president to serve UCI since its founding in 1957. He succeeds
Terri Hamilton Brown, who is stepping down to join National City Bank.

For the ArtWalk, Asterisk and Doubting Thomas have great shows scheduled... also, the artist showing at Pilgrim Church is cool, and it is worth seeing the place... I went there with a friend and his kids, a few months ago, and the caretaker took us into the belltower and let the kids ring the bell... Quasimdodo style... real trip

"Rosa Parks, Rosa Parks" was the chant as about 300 school chidren from the Cleveland Arts and Social Sciences Academy marched through the streets of downtown Cleveland. They were celebrating the life of Rosa Parks. She started the Civil Rights movement in 1955 as a result of her refusal to move from her seat to go to the back of a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Rosa Parks passed away on October 25, 2005 at the age of 92.

Both Mayor Campbell and Council President Jackson met with the arts community last week.  Attendance was low, both at the Play House on the east with Campbell and Cleveland Public Theatre on the westside with Jackson. The Campbell strategy was to identify a top 20 list of reasons Campbell has advanced the arts, with art summits, expansion of live/work zones and public funding through the "1% for arts" set aside that is a part of public construction contracts.  She says her track record merits her return to office for another four years.  Jackson said, through his leadership, he deserves credit for these initiatives as well, and his record in council deserves the public’s faith and confidence that he will work to represent them well.  But what would be an election without an added dose of cynicism?

If you, like any concerned citizen, are looking for a way to have an impact on the hiring of a new CEO for the Cleveland Municpal School District (CMSD), please download the attached excel spreadsheet which contains a list of the members of the Community Advisory Panel. The members of this panel were appointed by the School Board.

The Ohio Community Computing Center Network, the umbrella organization for free public computer centers and teaching centers, has provided testimony to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio stating that the SBC/AT&T Merger and the Verizon/MCI Merger are not in the best interests of the public.   The following is a summary, raising the concern that further telecom consolidation will reduce vital high-speed Internet opportunities for low-income urban and rural areas.  Today, high-speed Internet is critical for education, work and other activities of daily life.  While technological advances in more robust networks, immense Internet speed and additional services are exciting, if only a portion of spciety can participate in yet another technological evolution, Ohio will again be left struggling.  The testimony called for efforts to reduce the divide that finds low-income and rural communities with lower levels of broadband access and an end to telecom efforts to limit the rights of cities to invest in broadband services directly, on behalf of their residents.

The Planning and Community Consensus Committees are meeting tomorrow night (Tuesday, October 18) at 6 PM to discuss the two possible locations for the possible center.

On October 11, 2005, the NEO Excellence Roundtable will feature City of Cleveland Sustainability Programs Manager Andrew Watterson to discuss successes and opportunities for our core city and region to lead the country and world as an environmentally-friendly and sustainable community. In a presentation Andrew made on "the State of Our Environment", at a recent meeting of the Ohio League of Conservation voters, I learned Cleveland is already a leader with sustainability, in many important ways, by adding hybrid vehicles to the city fleet and enacting an anti-idling policy intended to reduce emissions and fuel consumption (by 10%)... see Hotel Bruce for details. Andrew mentioned plans for wind turbines in the city and indicated many other exciting developments ahead - please join us on Tuesday the 11th, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, at the City Club to discuss these important issues with our "Sustainability Czar".

On September 22nd, the City Club packed the room with Cleveland's "establishment" and "movement" leaders to listen to the voice of Generation X (born 1961-80). Rebecca Ryan held everyone's attention for an hour with her delivery that is straight to the point with a bit of humor. One of the points that she stressed is that the established leaders and new leaders need each other to make their communities more attractive and sustainable. She also highlighted that the "quality of place" is just as important as quality of jobs when GenXers decide to remain or relocate.

Kenneth Timmerman, author of "Countdown to Crisis: The Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran," offers a chilling account of Iran’s complicity in the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center; of its clandestine nuclear weapons program that could already include enough nuclear materials for 20-25 bombs; its current sheltering of Osama bin Laden; and its on-going financing of the insurgents in Iraq. Timmerman also takes the CIA to task for its “willful blindness and incompetence” in evaluating the theocratic Iranian regime’s motives and actions. Among Mr. Timmerman’s sources are former high-level Iranian intelligence officials who have defected and previously classified documents.
