EAT TRASH Campaign to End Food Waste is part of a growing movement that re-examines the role of food in a society that wastes 1/2 of all that it produces. This is a call to action. We inspire, awaken, challenge, educate, and empower individuals to reduce waste in the home, school, work, and cafeteria.

How many tenants live in a dark apartment - in Cleveland, Ohio?Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 12/25/2011 - 18:19.
In Cleveland, Ohio, there are blocks of apartments (like the one in the image above) which don't have any lights on inside at 8:00pm. I wonder what the 2010 census could tell us.... Are the tenants just all behind in their Cleveland Illuminating bills? or are these apartment blocks just empty? Possitively Cleveland!

Sitting Shiva - when you've lost your 16 year old daughter.....Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 12/25/2011 - 16:39.
I was staying with friends when I heard about this tragedy, and I immediately got a splitting migrane. I couldn't imagine the intensity of grief the parents and family were enduring. At at time like this you would want to crawl into a hole and drown in your depression... So the Jewish culture over centuries has developed an antidote - about as good as it can be - sitting Shiva.

NYCity's HIGH LINE - elevated rail road re-used as pedestrian corridor - very cool!Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 12/24/2011 - 12:45.
i I had never heard about this industrial re-use project until a relative gave me a heads up and gave me a slide show (image above credit CEB) The rail road right of way is on a viaduct - built decades ago - above street level and in numerous places went through the commercial warehouses and industrial buildings which the rail line served.

Mortgage Fraud--two of the largest players were indicted yesterday and the story was relegated to a back page and players get a slap on the wrist: "The magnitude of this crime is hard to fathom," Mason said. "A total of 453 homes, 358 of which fell into disclosure, were part of a master scheme to bilk the banking and real estate industries out of funds."

Exploding Feelings...Living through this Tragic Loss of a Beloved Child.Submitted by ANGELnWard14 on Tue, 12/20/2011 - 12:55.
So many times, I have opened this window to attempt to write a hearty blog recently and never gotten past the first thought....My heart seems so heavy and at a loss for words. Tragedy has hit below the belt this time and I simply cannot pretend that it's all okay. It's not. I see the headlines, but they don't process. I try to read some of the news, but it just drains me. I try to find the heart to fight the battles, but cannot find the gump. I try to find the motivation to react to the list of things to do...but find myself depleted before I begin.

Logan's RunSubmitted by lmcshane on Thu, 12/15/2011 - 22:33.
Growing up, of movies that stuck in my conscience, besides Planet of the Apes and Omega Man, Logan's Run stood out. Lately, I am revisiting the message of that sci-fi movie as I see worthy and intelligent "senior" members of our community...discarded by the workforce. Why do we insist on decommissioning the most experienced and valuable members of our society?

Curly American White Ash - Fraxinus americanaSubmitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 12/15/2011 - 21:57.
Recently I lent a hand at removing some dead limbs from a white ash tree. The trunk on the tree is in the 48 inch diameter range - and when I counted growth rings in the 20 inch diameter limb which was removed - the limb had been up in the sky defying gravity for 125+ years! Pretty amazing.

The Poor Man’s women's Guide To Survival GearSubmitted by Quest-News-Serv... on Thu, 12/15/2011 - 17:38.
Special Note: Obviously, an entire book could be written on this subject, which is a task beyond the scope of this article. The purpose of the following piece is to give those with financial difficulty a foothold on prepping without added pain. It is meant to be a starting point, not a compendium.Self discipline gets things done. Making a plan and then sticking to that plan despite our inner weaknesses and apprehensions gives greater returns in the long run. This method not only earns the respect we hold for ourselves, but also the respect others hold for us.

Confirmed: Fukushima disaster contaminated ocean 50 million times normal radiation, leaks ongoing - don't trust official sourcesSubmitted by Quest-News-Serv... on Tue, 12/13/2011 - 15:11.
The mainstream media has said absolutely nothing about this development, continuing its pattern of downplaying news involving Fukushima, radiation or the flawed structure of nuclear power plants. This is hardly surprising, given that many of the largest media outlets (such as NBC and MSNBC) are owned by corporations such as General Electric, the designer of many of the world's nuclear power plants.

Fracking - What? They Frack? You kidding? Willful suspension of disbelief - no pollution in my drinking water. Amazing. Yes!Submitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 12/12/2011 - 23:03.
All around Cleveland - in the local golf course, in the corner of the field - screened and painted green, there are sprouting gas wells. Fracked wells. And those fracked wells, full of all types of crazy chems - those chems will not migrate into the local water table.
No. No migration.
I believe that.

Richard Grossman - finally someone who talks sense - but unfortunately just died in November 2011Submitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 12/12/2011 - 22:13.
We all can tell that something has gone off the rails in American - and in our entire western culture. Capitalism has a flaw. Or 2. So last Saturday, when I was listening to some on-the-fly progressive radio station - I heard a podcast lecture given by Richard Grossman. A lecture describing why corporations were causing havoc - and why corporations under the US Constitution were not "people".

Firewood from Lithuania in local stores?Submitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 12/12/2011 - 10:21.
Take a look at your local chain grocer or your local big box store - you will find pallets stacked with bags of firewood from Eastern Europe. Is collecting firewood work Americans will not do? Bizarre. This sack (volume 1.36 cubic feet) of white birch sells for $13.99.
