Invest in Cycling and Walking to Restore NE Ohio Neighborhoods

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Sun, 01/18/2009 - 15:05.

Northeast Ohio has the opportunity to rebuild our neighborhoods and by offering healthier and more active transportation choices, we can create thriving neighborhoods where people want to live. However, the current transportation network leaves us way behind the curve. New investment to support walking and biking will create pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, an important step to get the nation back on track. Fortunately, it's a cost-effective step we can take in these tight financial times.

PLAIN DEALER LEADS FRADULENT MED MART PUSH

Submitted by Roldo on Fri, 01/16/2009 - 12:38.

Don’t you just love the dance the establishment, its puppet politicians and its subservient media are doing with the medical mart.

“This community needs to move ahead on the medical mart, and that means pushing for a decision on where to build it,” headlined a Plain Dealer editorial, “Decision time.”

Well, editorial writers, no one is building a medical mart.

TODAY'S PD - SKIMPY ON NEWS; HEAVY ON SPORTS

Submitted by Roldo on Thu, 01/08/2009 - 13:22.

Today’s Plain Dealer is very instructive.

The Metro pages have little news in six pages.
Ironically, the major metro page ad is from bad boy Auditor Frank Russo. It is a listing of delinquent personal property taxes – smaller than usual since the tax is being eliminated. Even so, the Russo ad takes up the entire second page and four inches across Page 6, which is dominated by the weather report, not news.

Then paid obituary notices eat up two full pages and a bit more.
The front Metro page is dominated – not by hard news - but by a sports story out of Avon.

CRY FOR CLEVELAND OR HAVE I ASKED THAT BEFORE

Submitted by Roldo on Wed, 01/07/2009 - 12:47.

In the 1990s, Cleveland had a rather highly educated City Council. I can’t remember the number but the percentage of lawyers among the 21 members was high. Cleveland also had an intelligent, crafty and feisty Mayor in Michael White. Today, City Council appears – with a few exceptions – to be inept and even farcical. Mayor Frank Jackson may be steady but one wouldn’t call him artful or exciting. Does it make any difference? Here is an example where it definitely didn’t.

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich and the Senate

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Tue, 01/06/2009 - 01:02.

I can't resist weighing in on the Illinois Senate appointment, the "go slow" Illinois legislature and events that can lead to the loss of a Senate Democrat seat. The common refrain is that Governor Blagojevich has lawfully appointed an individual who should be allowed to take the Senate seat. But if the Governor had been recorded and was awaiting prosecution for some other horrendous violation, we wouldn't be doubting the Senate's ability, desire and power to deny the seat.

FRANK JACKSON REMEMBERS AN ELECTION THIS YEAR

Submitted by Roldo on Mon, 01/05/2009 - 19:26.

Frank Jackson is trying to let people know he’s Cleveland’s mayor. After all, he does have to run for that office, though at least at this time there isn’t much talent around that appears able to challenge him.

However, the Medical Mart & Convention Center issue has shown how little weight he exhibits as the Cleveland mayor on big issues of the day.

PD MOVES TO RENT SPACE, PARKING AT SUPERIOR OFFICES

Submitted by Roldo on Mon, 01/05/2009 - 14:09.

They may soon begin selling reporter’s desks at the Plain Dealer.

A message today went to employees announcing the PD will be looking to rent parking and office space in its Superior Ave. and E. 18th building.

Management said that it was working with Grubb & Ellis “to explore the possibility of leasing a portion of the parking garage.”

In addition, the paper will attempt to lease space in its relatively new building working with Cresco, Ltd.

MED MART & CONVENTION CENTER MUDDLING MUDDLES ALONG

Submitted by Roldo on Fri, 01/02/2009 - 20:19.

What page are we on? What year is this? And where did Fred Nance go?

The latest muddle on the med mart suggests that the big boys can’t get the ducks in a row again.

Backroom dealing and pressure are being exerted. By someone upon someone. Messages are being sent.

MMPI (Merchandise Merchandise Properties Inc.) maybe wants a smaller convention center and apparently a different site than the Downtown Gang (Greater (or Lesser) Cleveland Partnership & Forest City Enterprise) desires.

That would benefit MMPI.

HERE ARE CONVENTION AND MEETING SPACES AVAILABLE NOW

Submitted by Roldo on Thu, 01/01/2009 - 15:59.

Just as a reminder that there is plenty of room for meetings without a new convention center. Why doesn’t Cleveland Positively sell out of these venues? Quoting from a Cleveland Crain’s Business listings here are convention and meeting spaces available in Cleveland and its near suburbs. Lest we forget in order to build another structure for the Forest City Gang: - Cleveland Convention Center – 124,067 square feet of meeting space. - I-X Center – 101,045 square feet. - Playhouse Square Center – 90,000 square feet.

What have you done lately for Randy Lerner, Sam Miller, Albert Ratner, Tim Hagan, the Cleveland Orchestra or the Playhouse Square Foundation?

Plenty.

You may not know it but as a resident of Cuyahoga County you have been extremely generous to these richest of our rich.
The figures are in through December for a number of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County taxes.

Bail Outs, Fiscal Crisis -- How Strong Are Our Cities?

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Mon, 12/29/2008 - 16:08.

While on the subject of cities, some analysts look to the nation's economic woes, it's impact on tax receipts for cities and foresee municipal bankruptcies growing at alarming rates.  Cities may need to look to municipal bankruptcy, chapter 9 of the bankruptcy code, to protect themselves and taxpayers. We haven't seen this since the Orange County bankruptcy in 1994, which lost over $1.5 billion.

Councilman Polensek Should Resign

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Mon, 12/29/2008 - 16:03.

I never thought Councilman Mike Polensek was a bad guy, maybe a frustrated, burned out, partially-jaded reformer facing difficult tasks in Cleveland, but not a bad guy. However, in my mind, you can't justify the latest problem involving his asking a local development nonprofit organization to buy a house for him while he secured financing.  He can say he gave the nonprofit a modest profit for helping he can say it was only a short-term thing and he can say he only did it for his mom, but....

Ohio Film Industry - Other States Move Further, While Ohio Governor Rejects A First Step Ahead With His Veto

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Fri, 12/19/2008 - 20:31.

In the same week that Ohio Governor Strickland vetoes a bill to create a tax credit for those creating film and video production jobs in Ohio, the Illinois Governor (yeah, that guy, the one who's been in the news lately), signed a bill to expand their 20% tax credit to 30%. Do you think he knows something that Governor Strickland does not?

MEDICAL MART TAX ESCALATES DESPITE RECESSION

Submitted by Roldo on Fri, 12/19/2008 - 09:02.

When do we shut it down?

The latest tax figure for collection of that quarter percent sales tax for the Medical Mart & Convention Center cost Cuyahoga County taxpayers totaled $3,479,373.20 in November.

Despite the recessionary impact on consumption, the tax continues to be higher than predicted. The November figure is a bit higher than the $3,427,717.90 in September.

The total collected since January when the tax started is $38,712,692.71. That’s $38 million extra in sales taxes paid by Cuyahoga consumers this year thus far.

RTA TAKING US ON ANOTHER FANTASY RIDE

Submitted by Roldo on Thu, 12/18/2008 - 19:49.

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority – better known as RTA – apparently has trouble knowing the purpose of its business.

Hint. It’s transportation. Not parking. Not tourism. Not beautification.

HAUSER DIED FOR LACK OF HEALTH INSURANCE

Submitted by Roldo on Thu, 12/18/2008 - 10:47.

Ed Hauser’s death was a tragedy that didn’t have to happen. It was a death that should not have happened. In many other countries, it would not have happened. The circumstances of his death may be the reason many more will die today and tomorrow. Ed died because America doesn’t have the decency to protect its own citizens with the health care that’s basic in all other industrial societies. The American aversion to universal health care is killing people by neglect. It must be corrected. Ed didn’t have health insurance.

FORMER MUSIC CRITIC ASSESSES PD TREATMENT OF ROSENBERG

Submitted by Roldo on Wed, 12/17/2008 - 12:37.

Below is a message that has been sent to Steve Esrati, a former Plain Dealer copy editor. Esrati distributes comments, gripes and memories of former Plain Dealer editorial people to others.

The following is an honest appraisal, in my opinion, of the demotion of Rosenberg from his position of music critic at the PD, with the help of PD editor Susan Goldberg and the management of the Cleveland orchestra.

The writer, Bob Finn, is retired and the highly respected former music critic of the Plain Dealer.

HOW COMMUNITY ACTIVISTS TREAT FOREST CITY ELSEWHERE

Submitted by Roldo on Wed, 12/17/2008 - 12:09.

Here’s a report from an organization in Brooklyn, N. Y., about Cleveland’s Forest City Enterprises and the real estate company’s activities in New York.

Why is it that Cleveland and Cuyahoga County citizens are NOT as active in protecting its citizens, for example, on the debacle being pushed by Forest City around the Medical Mart and Convention Center, a project made at Tower City’s executive offices.

COUNCIL HIRES SHARKEY FOR MAKEOVER AT $45,000

Submitted by Roldo on Tue, 12/16/2008 - 16:45.

No one can argue that Cleveland City Council needs better public grooming. Anything that can make the city’s legislative body look a bit better these days should top the legislative body’s Christmas list.

So that’s likely why PR-troubled Council President Marty Sweeney – who might be the most needy Council member – has hired political consultant and former Plain Dealer political editor Mary Anne Sharkey for some helpful advice.

I told Sharkey that she should use as her corporate name “Mission Impossible.” She laughed.

DEFAULT 30 YEARS AGO - FORBES, BUSINESS, PD vs. KUCINICH

Submitted by Roldo on Sat, 12/13/2008 - 15:39.

Has it been 30 years already?

Cleveland’s default, I was reminded by a call from WCPN, has an anniversary tomorrow - 30 years since the city was taken over the brink by Mayor Dennis Kucinich, Council President George Forbes, the Cleveland corporate community and the Plain Dealer.

A call from WCPN program host Rick Jackson sent me to check some old articles on the news of those days in Point of View, the newsletter I wrote to try and counter the propaganda of the Pee Dee and its corporate string-pullers. WCPN will have a report on the default Monday morning.
