Artist for all time: Rest In Peace Louise BourgeiosSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 06/01/2010 - 03:54.
I was saddened to learn today one of the most powerful and exciting sculptors of my lifetime, Louise Bourgeios, passed away May 31, 2010, at age 98. Certainly best known in Cleveland for a series of massive spiders she had exhibited in Playhouse Square, in 2002, her influence on artists and contemporary art was felt worldwide, and her work shall be loved forever.
Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Lead Emissions from Piston-Engine Aircraft Using Leaded Aviation Gasoline (yes they do)Submitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 06/01/2010 - 03:29.
Next time you drive by Burke Lakefront Airport - or perhaps when considering attending the next Cleveland Air Show - realize the following facts about such small-time airports and many of the planes flying there... they cause lead poisoning! From "Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Lead Emissions from Piston-Engine Aircraft Using Leaded Aviation Gasoline: Regulatory Announcement", from the EPA, that certainly impacts Burke Lakefront Airport and other small local airports, and should have been reported in the local media (as this is a time for public comment), consider these facts - There are almost 20,000 airport facilities in the U.S. where leaded avgas is used ( Burke is certainly among them) - Aviation gasoline is utilized in general aviation aircraft with piston engines, which are generally used for instructional flying, air taxi activities, and personal transportation. Lead is not used in jet fuel, the fuel utilized by most commercial aircraft (Burke seems popular with piston engine airplanes) - Emissions of lead from piston-engine aircraft using leaded avgas comprise approximately half of the national inventory of lead emitted to air (being dumped on area citizens from various altitudes along the flightpaths for Burke Lakefront Airport) - EPA estimates that approximately 14.6 billion gallons of leaded avgas were consumed between 1970 and 2007, emitting approximately 34,000 tons of lead (we sure got/get our share) - Airport-specific lead inventories for 2008 are currently undergoing review by state, local and tribal authorities and will be completed in 2010. Citizens of Northeast Ohio should have been informed about local inventories and plans to meet more stringent EPA guidelines in the future... perhaps it is time to now CLOSE THE DAMN AIRPORT!!! The EPA will accept public comment on the ANPR for 60 days following its publication in the Federal Register. To provide comments to EPA, follow the instructions provided in today’s action... read more below....

Vandalism around treehouse updateSubmitted by tremontsoul on Fri, 05/28/2010 - 09:52.
Update: Once again our maintenance we hired (exclusive of treehouse) which has been maintaining our property on an as needed weekly or bi-monthly basis for 10 years has had their hands increasingly full picking up trash--broken beer bottles, glass, pizza boxes, and other items around treehouse on our property. Not only does this create a very hazardous situation, but invites strays on the property.

A Dangerously Misleading Article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer Prompts Me To Publish REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL CANCER RISKSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Thu, 05/20/2010 - 01:45.
I was flabbergasted to read an article in the Cleveland Plain Deal titled "Organic food benefits debated in wake of president's report on cancer, environment", about the 2008–2009 Annual Report of the President’s Cancer Panel - REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL CANCER RISK... What We Can Do Now, that has nothing to do with ORGANIC FOOD, is misleading, and seems intended to further dumb-down local citizens to the health hazards caused by excessive polluting and medical interventions here, preventing citizens from following one of the core Recommendations:

further update on land development surrounding treehouseSubmitted by tremontsoul on Tue, 05/18/2010 - 09:56.
Both long stayed and new residents as well as businesses interest and support for creating a green scape proposed by me for the the property is very high. I feel that this is the most appropriate and positive solution that would benefit all equally without sacrificing additional parking spaces. Creating a huge tar surface with a sea of vehicles (even with some landscaping) right in the center of such a beautiful and historic district would be unconscionable.

"When my gut tells me something is wrong, I've been around long enough to know something is wrong"Submitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 05/18/2010 - 00:03.
I got chills today, scanning ongoing coverage of Cleveland City Hall's plans to lock citizens and their children here into a 10 year sole-source LED lighting contract with Sunpu Opto, of China - Cleveland council committee embraces LED lighting deal - when I made the interpretation my instincts about Sunpu Opto are the same as Councilman Polensek's... which means my instincts may be wrong, as how could he be right? Polensek's take on the Sunpu Opto deal:

Question of the Day: Do You Trust GE or Mayor Jackson Economists, Analysts and Lawyers More?Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 05/15/2010 - 06:07.
I try hard to ignore what folks at Cleveland City Hall and City Council do, day to day, their performance is so depressing. I just expect the worst and hope that won't harm my children. So I have not been following the odd trade missions Jackson's people have apparently been making to the Far East lately (when, on what Fundation's dime, why) cutting odd long-term deals with Chinese lighting companies promising to bring clean jobs to America (does "clean jobs" even translate into Chinese?). Jackson... 10 year deal... "Far East" trade mission... Sunpu-Opto... yeah, right. I like touring China too... sounds well worth the effort?!?! 77% of Clevelanders did just re-elect Jackson, and the Foundations and PD love the man, so let it ride... But then I noticed GE has attacked the Mayor for his jet-setting wheeling-dealing economic development ways and I realized I'm not alone in this backwater slum of East Cleveland noticing what a mess Jackson and his cronies are making of the region and world, now that he has gone global. Some important people like the shareholders at GE are starting to care.

TREEHOUSE EXPANSION VARIANCE APPEAL WITHDRAWNSubmitted by tremontsoul on Tue, 05/11/2010 - 14:17.
The variance appeal for treehouse to expand has been withdrawn, due to the support, unity and vigilence of concerned residents, businesses and political organizations. We now have a grand opportunity to create a most unique greenscape in the heart of tremont. A format for the neighborhood which both residents and businesses can share in pride without adding to the parking congestion of the neighborhood and further solidifying it as a vibrant , progressive and sustainably oriented neighborhood. A win win situation for all.
SAVING SANSAISubmitted by Keith Winston on Mon, 05/10/2010 - 18:51.
Today I walked through one of the most exciting plants in the Collinwood community. and I learned that this plant is for health, and I saw some of the most interesting things. And seeing the product that this company produce is incredible. This company is producing something that is good for us all, and also trying to create jobs for the community, and as needed how cool is that.

HOOLEY (IRISH FESTIVAL) at KAMM'S CORNERSSubmitted by ANGELnWard14 on Mon, 05/10/2010 - 12:16.
05/15/2010 - 12:00 05/15/2010 - 20:00 Etc/GMT-4 Don't Miss This Event! - A special neighborhood celebration called The Hooley on Kamm's Corners takes place Saturday, May 15th. “Hooley,” Irish slang for party or celebration, is the new name of what will become an annual street festival right in “downtown” Kamm’s Corners. Go Cavs, But Your Advertising On Our Landmarks Must Go. This is not art or culture, and is ugly!Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 05/08/2010 - 23:22.
In 2006, Gen-X Consultant Rebecca Ryan came to Cleveland to speak at the City Club and lead some roundtable discussions (hosted by realNEO) on making this region more desirable to the global Generation-X population. She was working on Gen-X planning in Akron and Canton and proposed to the City of Cleveland some collaboration with her regional efforts - she was suggesting to brainstorm very openly at very little cost to the city. Her outreach received the cold shoulder here. The last time I remember communicating about this was with Chris Ronayne, then with the city of Cleveland, and I was basically told the development people were too busy trying to close a Nike Cavaliers advertising deal to bother with Rebecca Ryan's proposal - the city economic development resources were too focused on Cavaliers advertising to care.

A group of clean energy activists braved the cold rain Tuesday to hear a leading climatologist make his case against coal. Speaking in front of UNC’s Cogeneration Facility, a power plant a half-mile from campus that burns coal and natural gas, Columbia University professor James Hansen challenged all universities to eliminate coal use and push for clean energy.

Friends of Charlie Mosbrook (seems nearly everyone in Cleveland) have been concerned for his sudden health issues this year, and gladdened to see him back up, around, and performing stronger than ever. Featured above is a video from Charlie's website - inspiring, as is all his work - and he has many events upcoming - two in Lakewood may interested realNEO readers (we have lots of traffic in Lakewood)...
