10/18/2006 - 08:00 10/20/2006 - 17:00 Etc/GMT-4 I just got the following event details from our Tech Czar Michael DeAloia about an important international conference coming to Cleveland - The International Association of Information Technology Asset Managers - with keynote by Case VP of IT Lev Gonick (congratulations, Lev). I've worked with lots of high level global IT managers and they are an excellent draw to Cleveland... they like to explore and they spend money, so this conference is a gem. And they are offering a special deal for Cleveland IT companies worth checking out. Most interesting to me and you is how they are selling Cleveland to their international membership... check out our forum on 22 reasons to attend this conference in Cleveland, Ohio, and add your ideas to share with these important guests of our community, and all others! ? of the Day: Who will provide Ohio the leadership missing for past 16 years?Submitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 09/20/2006 - 12:04.
I just watched the debate of candidates for Governor for the state of Ohio - Ken Blackwell vs. Ted Strickland - and strongly recommend anyone who cares about the future of the state and region do the same - it will be rebroadcast tonight on Channel 5 and is available at their website. I haven't really been following any of the campaigns so far this election term, other than being exposed to lots of very unsophisticated, annoying and at times revolting negative ads from Republican PACs, which makes me certainly not want to vote for any Republicans. That those candidates allow such crap to be associated with them shows their lack of substance and character. But the debate today between Strickland and Blackwell proved Blackwell's lack of substance, and that Strickland is a smart, thoughtful and enlightened civic citizen prepared to do the right things for the state. See map: Google Maps Issues of Glocalization equally important in Toronto and ClevelandSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 09/17/2006 - 00:49.
This weekend the Toronto arts and culture scene was world-class beyond belief, featuring the final weekend of the Toronto Film Festival, the opening of the new Four Seasons Opera House (premiering Wagner's Ring Cycle), many smaller community arts festivals, and two major arts festivals – the Queen West Arts Crawl, featuring over 500 artists and galleries along mind-blowing Queen Street) and the august 11th Annual Canadian Art Gallery Hop. The Queen West Arts Crawl was way cool, but I stayed in Toronto an extra day for Software Freedom Day and the Canadian Art Gallery Hop, as that featured a free “Glocal Live Roundtable” of many of Canada's arts leaders. “The term GLOCAL fuses global with local and points to the meshing of macro and micro realms of experience in the contemporary world of Internet technologies and instant information. The speed and collapsing distances of this new reality hold challenging implications for traditional identities and communities, along with promising opportunities.” The roundtable was astounding... see below for detailed notes of interest to all concerned about arts, culture and the economy, local to anywhere in the world and global.
Software Freedom Day shows how powerful FOSS movement is in TorontoSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 09/16/2006 - 19:23.
By lucky coincidence, I was in Toronto on international Software Freedom Day and so had easy access to Ubuntu today, right when I needed it, and lots of Ubuntu and FOSS experts, and got to meet the cool people in Toronto who run the Toronto Ubuntu and Linux User Groups, and the Linux Caffe, and the awesome Center for Social Innovation... this city rocks in every way. Tomorrow is Software Freedom Day... here's how this is celebrated in Toronto... what about Cleveland?Submitted by Norm Roulet on Fri, 09/15/2006 - 11:43.
I'm on Wireless Toronto while up here (very cool free social change program) and saw on their events calendar that tomorrow is Software Freedom Day, and the core activities in Toronto are being organized out of our building on Spadina... here are the details below. I checked the Software Freedom Day site and there are teams in Ohio in Wooster and Dayton but not in Cleveland (OMG!)... if I'd known before I would have helped organize one there... a must for 2007... for now, if you want to get up the curve on free open source software (FOSS) and declare social software freedom, set up an account at realneo and comment here and we'll get in touch with you to help. What a week for fine art in Cleveland! In a wise move to spread the cultural-wealth and art enthusiasts time, Spaces made great noise and started the weekend early by throwing their "Street Repairs" opening party on the relatively quiet 09/07/06 Thursday night, drawing in a huge crowd. See map: Google Maps ? of the Day: Dear Plain Dealer, is this the "street culture" you hope to kill?Submitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 09/05/2006 - 06:12.
In a recent series of editorial rants in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the authors proposed Cleveland must attack "street culture" to correct our condition as the most impoverished big city in America. I've posted on their position and my disgust at their suggestions this is an NAACP issue, or an issue at all, and I questioned what on Earth they mean by "street culture". Then, while working on a website cataloging my parents' art collection for the May Show Project Philip Williams and I are organizing I understood what the PD wants to kill... the culture that empowered the art shown above, being a "Jazz Bowl" by one of the world's most prominent designers, Cleveland's beloved Victor Schreckengost, and a print masterpiece by one of the world's most renowned "minimalist" artists, Frank Stella. Without "street culture" neither of these works of art would exist. Good idea, PD. ( categories: )

09/07/2006 - 17:30 09/07/2006 - 20:30 Etc/GMT-4 I just got the following invitation from my favorite economic development leader in NEO, Cleveland Tech Czar Michael DeAloia, and I am intrigued he is not only a technology visionary but a poet. See map: Google Maps Case Starts Energy Ambassador/Adopt a Building ProgramSubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Wed, 08/30/2006 - 22:31.
I am very excited! I recently volunteered to become an Energy Ambassador at Case Western Reserve Univeristy, part of the Adopt a Building program. I will be adopting Mather House, the building where I work. Mather House is a century old Gothic Revival former girls dorm turned office building -- probably not the most energy efficient on campus. I suspect the most significant improvements at Mather House will be directly related to changing the residents' behavior. I think I could be a good energy ambassador; I am always turning out lights, I go to great pains to recycle, I hate air conditioning and I walk rather than using the campus shuttle bus. But I am looking for suggestions as to how myself and the other residents of Mather House could really make a difference. Please post your ideas. I would also appreciate links to good energy conservation sites. The Adopt a Building program is just getting started. My first "Ambassador's" meeting will be next Wednesday. I will fill you in with more details late next week.
USDA Designates 20 Biobased Items for Federal ProcurementSubmitted by Zebra Mussel on Tue, 08/29/2006 - 21:33.
USDA Designates 20 Biobased Items for Federal Procurement WASHINGTON, Aug. 23, 2006- The U.S. Agriculgure Department has announced two proposed rules under the Federal Biobased Products Preferred Procurement Program, designating 20 items that must receive special consideration by all federal agencies when making purchases. "The designation of these 20 biobased items is a major step in advancing the federal preferred procurement program for biobased products," said Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns. "When finalized, 1,500 biobased products will be given procurement preference by federal agencies, generating new economic opportunities for biobased product producers and U.S. farmers and ranchers, while providing new choices for U.S. consumers." 7GEN Canada showing Material Matters to the worldSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 08/14/2006 - 23:01.
An especially exciting project 7GEN Canada is undertaking is the transformation of the premier gallery of the glass art of Canada, Material Matters, into a virtual community. In doing this, we are taking a physical gallery at 215 Spadina Avenue, in Toronto (which 7GEN also calls home), and transforming that into a community of all Canada's glass artists, and a global marketplace for their art.
7GEN May Show in NEO, but most exciting developments are now in CanadaSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 08/14/2006 - 10:04.
Lisa Wuohela in front of Material Matters, the premier gallery of Canadian glass art in the world.
The August 14, 2006 REALNEO header (included below) has great meaning, as it introduces a new initiative of 7GEN, LLC, the organization formed by Phillip Williams, Evelyn Kiefer and myself following the attempted theft of REALinks, LLC, property by my former partner, Peter Holmes. This header is of a great NEO art collection, of my parents, Doctors Ann and Norman Roulet, which Phillip, Evelyn and I are documenting on-line as a first service of May Show for the NEO community... in the future, my parents and other NEO art collectors and art dealers and artists may show the world the art they create, sell, collect and exhibit here in Northeast Ohio. The May Show portal being developed by 7GEN, LLC, will be the only interface in NEO to so well document art and make it available to the public, far eclipsing capabilities of even our beloved Cleveland Museum of Art. But that is not the most exciting development for 7GEN I have to share with NEO today, as we are basing future operations at the location shown above, on Spadina Avenue in Toronto, Canada. Read a brief introduction of what, how and why 7GEN will operate in Canada below. Welcome to the home of Material Matters, and now 7GEN Canada, at 215 Spadina Avenue, Toronto, Canada
Cool Tool for Documenting Server Configurations for HIPAASubmitted by itgal85 on Tue, 08/08/2006 - 12:09.
Hello, my name is Julie Houston and I came across this cool tool that automates docmenting critical security settings for HIPAA and other compliance audits. What is really cool is that this is absolutely free and it will not expire after a 30 day trial period. There are also no limits on the number of servers. I highly recommend checking this one out!! Visualizing the optimal East Cleveland Community for seven generationsSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 08/01/2006 - 03:52.
When picturing the 7GEN Community of East Cleveland, anchored at the Star Center, picture a green, safe, dense, technologically innovative, NEO-urban, walkable, healthy, prosperous, active, intergenerational lifelong learning village - a hub and spoke community redevelopment that forms a vibrant village that integrates East Cleveland, University Circle, Glenville and Cleveland Heights. Server Upgrade Yesterday: Sorry for inconvenienceSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 08/01/2006 - 03:19.
You may have noticed REALNEO was off line some Sunday and on Monday, for the first time since we moved to our current server. We apologize for the longer-than-anticipated down time. We literally relocated the physical server where REALNEO and lots of our other sites are served to fasted bandwidth (this is all in California). So now that is done and we should be up and running again for another many years without interruption
