RADICAL HOUSING CORRIDOR

Now it is pretty easy – and sort of sporting fun -  to be critical of what we think are other people’s hair brained schemes and plans, but  every now and then, to balance out one’s cynicism, one needs to come up with a radical plan to supply a target for every other sporting cynic.   This is the dynamic that creates the basis for stimulating conversation.  And it is how bold ideas get shaken out.

So one of the past posts on this blog  concerned architect Gehry and the extent to which his designs were or were not “moral”.  While I was sniping at Gehry and his clients for the extremely high cost of the Gehry buildings, I hadn’t proffered any alternative designs which were visually interesting and novel, and which might be able to expand the “shelter” envelope more than Gehry’s twisting and turning the facades of office and school buildings.

stopping to enjoy in just spring

Submitted by Susan Miller on Tue, 04/18/2006 - 10:23.

I have a laptop. (A slow starter/late adopter you're thinking.) It was a holiday gift that was meant to free me from my house. I can get out and write, correspond, research anywhere I can get online. But the cold weather and my deep appreciation for my home environment and my dogs have kept me in the house. Now, however, I sit most days in the sunny breakfast room of my 89 year old Cleveland Heights home and write surrounded by windows.

I received a postcard for the gallery opening of this exhibit. I've summarized the basics below. Please visit the website for more details.

SPACES mounts the first exhibition in Ohio to explore the idea of Afrofuturism, the subculture that deals with the interplay between time, technology, race and culture in the USA. Seventeen artists, from both historical and future viewpoints, tackle the impact of technology on the physical, social and spiritual lives of black people.

From science fiction to film and cultural exploration, the artists create work in painting, video and video games, sound installation, spoken word, sculpture, cinema and drawings. Conceived by The Soap Factory and Obsidian Arts in Minneapolis, the exhibition Afrofuturism was originally curated by Minneapolis-based artist Ernest Bryant and Suzanne Roberts of Obsidian Arts. SPACES introduced six northeast-Ohio artists into the exhibition.

Controling Access to the Internet

Submitted by William on Wed, 04/12/2006 - 08:07.

Hello all,

I had an interested situation happen to me yesturday that I would like to share.  CAAO is going to be exhibiting at a upcoming event at the CSU Wolstien Center.  Internet access is an additional cost of $175. I did not need CSU's internet connection as I have my own wirless connection in my laptop via Alltel's service.   I was told that I am not allowed to bring in my own connection and would have to pay $175 or go without.  So I had a decision to make...do I pay 3 months of DSL to exhibit for 4 hours or do I go without.  Due to limited buget I decided to go without.

Why open standards matter

Submitted by Phillip Williams on Mon, 04/10/2006 - 07:25.

" I think open source software is a good thing, but I've never bought into the religious fundamentalist fervor of a lot of the circles I move in as an IT reporter. Condemning people for not using Linux instead of Windows, and the strong-arm tactics of some proprietary software makers that try to lock people into a certain product, are just two sides of the same coin. But open standards that make real choices possible? Now, that's something I can get behind." - Tina Gasperson

WIRELESS COMMUNITY MESH INTERNET

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 04/08/2006 - 13:08.

About five years ago I watched a bucket truck pull up under this light pole and the guy went up and attached this radio device onto the arm of the light pole.  The unit is powered right off the constant feed to the light’s photo voltaic switch.  It took the guy less than 5 minutes to install.  Note how the power plug is piggybacked by the old photo cell.

When he came back down to ground level I asked the fellow what the purpose of the radio unit was, and he showed me a plan of the Town on which numerous hexagonal cells were show.   In the center of each of those cells (1/4 mile radius) was to be one of these radio transceivers.  The cells communicated downstream to the numerous homes in each cell, and they communicated upstream to two or three cell tower locations from which they connected to land telephone lines.  The unit was able to handle dozens of simultaneous discrete individual connections with data rates up and down in the 300kbs range.

Their intended purpose?  Wireless multi-channel digital connection for internet and TV!
