Cuyahoga River tenants - St Mary's Cement (USA)

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 09/18/2009 - 22:47.

circular silo stair silhoet image jeff buster

This image is on its side - the reality is 90 degrees counter clockwise.  but that doesn't matter.   For a web site, the landscape view is easier to project on a 16x9 screen.

The afternoon light across two silos (one riveted, one cast in place concrete) at St Mary's Cement in Cleveland, Ohio put the helical staircase shadow spectacularly on the concrete silo.  Every detail goes to the focus of the sun.

NYT: 36 Hours in Cleveland

Submitted by Eternity on Fri, 09/18/2009 - 22:41.

New York Times - “YOU Gotta Be Tough” was a popular T-shirt slogan worn by Clevelanders during the 1970s, a grim period marked by industrial decline, large-scale population flight and an urban environment so toxic the Cuyahoga River actually caught on fire. These days it still helps to be at least a little tough; a fiercely blue-collar ethos endures.

What does it say that Obama's Surgeon General choice is overweight and used to work for Burger King?

Submitted by Eternity on Fri, 09/18/2009 - 22:24.

Bill Maher @ The Huffington Post - President Obama has identified all the problems with the health care system, but there's one tiny issue he refuses to tackle, and that's our actual health.  And get this: Surgeon General Benjamin had previously been a nutritional advisor to Burger King. The only advice a "health expert" should give Burger King is to stop selling food.

" 7 out of the 15 board members of tremont west development corp. should be low income - by laws need change

Submitted by Quest-News-Serv... on Fri, 09/18/2009 - 03:04.

hi claude -all - i need your help-
i have been advocating for " seven out of the fifteen twdc board members should be low income - to avoid corruption and have deversity - the by-laws should be rewitten to include this"
the only way the wonderfull vested interest folks won't be able to control twdc and our money is to have low income board members - and if you do research many of the top boards that pass out the power and money like mental health etc., have a fifty fifty ratio of board members - 50% are consumers of the services -
so why not twdc-

POCKET PARK WITH A NERF BALL AND NET.....AND A FLAG

Submitted by jerleen1 on Fri, 09/18/2009 - 01:01.

Well, I guess that at the present time those of us who were hoping to get TWDC and the Long Range Planning Committee behind helping out with getting some great outdoor recreational facilities and pocket parks in the Tremont neighborhood, might just have to settle for a little spot with a nerf ball and net.

A realneo member contacted help to report that the header image was loading in the Comment and Reply body fields... I was having the same problem in Firefox, but not in Safari.

REALNEO administrator Jeff Schuler replied that he ran some upgrades on our site software last night (thanks Jeff!) and he suggested we try clearing our cache, which I did and that cleared the problem up. If you are having this problem, try clearing your cache.

Coal Steam Generation Plant at University Hospitals Cleveland

It recently came to my attention that one of the most serious sources of pollution in Cuyahoga County is literally in my back yard. Less than two kilometers upwind from my home are the coal and natural gas fired external boilers at the power plant shown above, at University Hospitals, operated by Medical Center Company (MCCo), polluting the surrounding neighborhoods since the 1930s.

Secondary Party Affiliations - Democrats Losing Their Way?

Submitted by getoutandvote on Wed, 09/16/2009 - 09:26.

In Ward 14, both candidates who emerged from the primaries seem to have strong 2nd party affiliations.  While both are registered Democrats, has their 2nd party affiliations helped them get out of the mire of the current corruption sweeping local democratic politics?  Will their affiliations help or hurt?  Does it make them more "independent?"  Are 3rd parties ever again going to be able to gain more traction in the political system?  Anyone else find this interesting?

PHILLIP MORRIS WRONG - STOKES HAD NO DULL RACES

Submitted by Roldo on Tue, 09/15/2009 - 18:38.

Why Phillip Morris would bring Carl Stokes’s name into a discussion of a dull mayoral race is beyond me. Stokes wasn’t in any dull mayoral elections. Not in 1969. Not ever.
