Environmentwater vs petrol/ corn here vs corn thereSubmitted by Susan Miller on Sun, 04/08/2007 - 13:52.
I stopped into the very end of David Morgenthaler's talk at CSU a few weeks ago. When I arrived I heard Phil Lane step to the mic to ask Morgenthaler if he was investing his venture capital in second tier carbon trading markets. Lane went onto describe sustainable businesses and innovations like his own innovation which he said is being built somewhere (not Cleveland) currently -- a car that gets 100 mpg. While Morgenthaler indicated that he did not have an interest in investing in carbon trading, he did say that he was interested in knowing more about Lane's auto invention.

Easter Egg Dye = Toxic Terror?Submitted by Zebra Mussel on Thu, 04/05/2007 - 21:36.
Easter rolls around and you start mixing up heavy duty reactive synthetic dyes using household chemistry like viniger. Safe enough for Paas yet strong enough to stain my counter. Where's a toxicologist when you need one?

Six Simple Sentences to Save the World : Cryptic Cryptographers and Codebreakers Creatively Collaborate and Cohesively Coalesce!Submitted by Sudhir Kade on Thu, 04/05/2007 - 18:27.
Many of the world's brightest cryptographers are codebreaking as we speak, in dark labs all over. The DaVinci Code is the perplexing puzzle puzzling people like the Pope. I have some hardcore thoughts around which we All need to postulate and ponder. World's intellectuals Unite! My idea to Crack that Code is to simply state the following Six Sentences. Listen up Y'all!
What a difference voters make: State of Ohio Files Suit Against Paint Makers over Public Nuisance of Lead PoisoningSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 04/04/2007 - 13:35.
YES - this is a huge story... the State of Ohio is suing Sherwin Williams and other paint manufacturers over the public nuisance caused by lead paint they sold here over decades... the state is joining five Ohio cities in this battle for our citizens - this case could very well take over the battle for the cities - very exciting times for our down-trodden state. It is exciting to see the new Ohio leadership in action, after so many years of poor performance by past administrations.

Introducing the VelomobileSubmitted by johnmcgovern on Wed, 04/04/2007 - 10:56.
The bi/tricycle of the future, an enclosed recumbent known as a velomobile, has arrived in the USA in form of a space-age looking pod with trunk space as well as hybrid-electric technology that provides electric assist for steep hills and charges from your pedaling motion. The velomobile pictured is the GO-One . Velomobiles enables year round cycling, though it would seem smooth surfaces are preferred. While there are certainly advantages to a traditional upright bicycle, there are also numerous disadvantages. However, lets bask in this revolutionary transportation technology and we can discuss the downsides later....

US court rules against Bush in global warming caseSubmitted by Charles Frost on Mon, 04/02/2007 - 13:37.
US court rules against Bush in global warming case The US government has lost one of the most important environmental cases to reach the Supreme Court in decades. The nation's highest court has ruled that the US Environmental Protection Agency does have the power to regulate harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Until now the agency had refused to determine carbon dioxide and other emissions from new cars and trucks that contribute to climate change.

Downspout Diverters - with or without rain barrelsSubmitted by Charles Frost on Thu, 03/29/2007 - 07:42.

I found this inexpensive downspout diverter on the web, and have been using a couple of them for a while. It allows me to divert the rainwater onto my yard, but in the "closed" position, it still works as a downspout.... so I don't have to "disconnect" my downspout in order to use my rainwater in my yard (and help keep it out of the overtaxed storm sewer system). Wonderful for those summer thunderstorms, when the yard is so parched. ...............................................................................................................

Federal Transportation Cuts Looming - Contact Governor to Protect Bike and Pedestrian ProjectsSubmitted by Kevin Cronin on Wed, 03/28/2007 - 23:45.
I need to raise an important point of federal budget minutia and ask that you email the Governor to protect riding and pedestrian infrastructure in NE Ohio. The President wants to save some money so he has rescinded (or canceled) spending for transportation enhancement programs. Because federal transportation money was already distributed to the states years ago, he can't cancel it directly, so he tells the Governors to decide where to cut. Transportation Enhancement money is important to NE Ohio. In fact, of all states receiving transportation enhancement money, Ohio trails only California, Texas and Florida. But if Ohio receives a lot of money, we are also being asked to generate a lot of the rescission money – nearly $139 million.
On the Road to BlandSubmitted by Martha Eakin on Wed, 03/28/2007 - 18:26.
Read a summary of Martha Schwartz’s lecture-Landscapes of Awareness- at the Harvard School of Design http://archinect.com/features/article.php?id=54068_0_23_0_M. Our city is not expanding, but if we let ODOT have its way, well-preserved old structures that tell our history and provide character will be swept aside for more rivers of concrete. What are we doing? Check out Carol A Poh’s letter (with author’s permission) to ODOT’s Section 106 committee. (NRHP = National Registry of Historic Places) Both the Broadway Mills building and the Marathon Station next to it have been recommended eligible, which is why they are not discussed in Carol’s letter, but that does not mean they will be saved. Instead, as was suggested in the PD, Clevelanders may be reminded of their former presence by a plaque or some other fitting???? marker. We are heading for bland at highway speed! Following is Carol’s letter:

I received an informative email this afternoon from Richard McDougald Enty, Planning Team Leader, Programming & Planning Department, Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, about some of their Transit Oriented Development initiatives and vision. It is very exciting to see this as an active subject for discussion and planning here. I am a strong supporter of Transit Oriented Development and consider it the core foundation on which we should rebuild the City of Cleveland and surrounding suburbs. AUSTIN POWER, In Quest for Cleaner Energy,Texas City Touts Plug-In CarSubmitted by Charles Frost on Tue, 03/27/2007 - 06:57.
This is from yesterday's Wall Street Journal.... Austin plans on using the local wind power that is generated at night to charge plug-in hybrid car batteries, and then tap into those same car batteries for extra power during the day time. If they can do it in Austin, why not here in Cleveland, particularly if we are going to be building a thousand wind turbines in our lake? It seems like a nice "green" plan to me.

REALNEO to be featured on WVIZ Applause, premiering this Thursday, March 29, 2007Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 03/25/2007 - 12:33.
I was quite honored to be contacted, a few weeks ago, by the producer of one of my favorite television programs, Dee Perry's "Applause", asking for information about REALNEO. Seems he was doing research on the spectacular Convivium 33 Gallery, which we have featured extensively on REALNEO, covering Christopher Pekoc here and Clarence Van Duzer here (photos from which were featured in Cleveland Magazine), so REALNEO came up in search results. The producer saw REALNEO as in interesting source of insight on arts and culture in NEO and suggested to his staff doing a segment on Applause about REALNEO. Even though we scheduled the interview, this seemed very abstract until I just saw a promotion on WVIZ for the show, featuring a scrolling view of the REALNEO home page.

Expanding 3D growth theory: Perforated Pipe Theory (PPT)Submitted by Sudhir Kade on Sat, 03/24/2007 - 22:37.
Some much anticipated R&R in beautiful Cincinnati has helped my culture, cultivate, and cognitively create a theoretical evolution. One of several growth mechanisms proposed as a key infrastructure component for Grow Coil Theory (GCT) is microperforation - penetrating piping with microsized miniature holes that allow high value growths 'root access'- this would apply beautifully as a stopgap or interim step in the channeling of human or animal waste to food streams (ethanol, compost, vermicompost). Imagine, for example, each length of pipe or even coiled spiral being approximated by formula CL = (2*Pi*radius*length) = acreage grown. IF the acreage grown refers to the inner surface area of any cylinder (or tube) - coiled or otherwise we could surmise that it would be slightly greater than equally possible to grow on the outer surface of any cylinder (or pipe), or coiled pipe for that matter. So we refer to the 'Chia Pet' variation as a growth infrastructure and in this case it would apply beautifully to grow green growths on the OUTER surface of any cylinder. In other words, we can grow on the inner surface of the cylinder and approximate THIS area as CL as well! My previously posted concept, to channel human feces (resolving the fecal matter) to foodstuff (ethanol, compost, etc) takes on a more interesting connotation to consider - we can grow green growths on the OUTER surface by penetrating pipes with perforations just large enough to allow plant 'root access' and in the process, keep a flowing food source for shrubbery and shrooms alike. again, this allows for oxygenation of sewage systems and helps us get to the ultimate goal of using sewage spaces more effectively and creating value in the process.

The Future of Sustainable Organization and Development : Ring Cone Theory and Grow Coil Theory Unite!Submitted by Sudhir Kade on Fri, 03/23/2007 - 17:49.
I thought I'd take this opportunity to tie together many of the theoretical pieces that I've developed and evolved over the years which just might comprise a holistic collection of synergistic sustainability submittals that comprise a body of work that could be considered contributive to the collective Whole. They all fit together in a seamless way, without wayward explanation needed. Ultimately these could be taken to begin to build a roadmap toward the ultimate vision - significant progress beyond the impending activation of the Genesis project, and the core change mechanisms and revenue driving efforts to drive it. To put it simply, I hope the world's change leaders take these and implement them as they see fit for their particular sphere of influence. If we take care to integrate structure, process and function meaningfully it should result in sustainable positive change. Recent dialogues with AI/change leaders from Nepal and Zambia bode well for implementation potential.
