Submitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 02/13/2007 - 17:48.

Investors in Manitowoc have ponied up about 60 million to outfit an old steel fabrication facility with new equipment to weld up wind turbine towers.  They intend to produce about one tower every 2 days from material supplied by the wind turbine manufacturer.

Sam Miller for Forests

Submitted by Susan Miller on Mon, 02/12/2007 - 09:41.

The Joyce Foundation has given a $5 million grant to begin cleanup of the Maumee River. Toady's article in the PD begins What happens in Northwest Ohio doesn't stay in Northwest Ohio. One of the things that will happen as part of this effort to reduce run off from agricultural land in Northwest Ohio is the planting of trees. “Working with farmers to plant trees and vegetation along the Tiffin and Blanchard rivers to restore wetlands and create a continuous buffer; and to test new drainage ditches to reduce sediment." This article extols the opportunities for industrial Northwest Ohio. But at one time this area was home to the Black Swamp.

"Industrial wind, corporate vandalism" Another conscientious view

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 02/11/2007 - 15:58.

Here http://www.aweo.org/Lake.html  is another viewpoint on wind turbines which I take seriously, in particular regarding the inconsistent bi-polar goals of corporations and the need for conservation.  I can't give credit to the author because though I Googled I can't get back to original newspaper publication.  Please post author if anyone can.

HOW TO SHIFT TRAFFIC FROM one URL TO ANOTHER URL

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 02/10/2007 - 16:27.

One way to move traffic seamlessly to a new different url is to set up a redirect on the first site, but that means the redirecting server must be active and cooperative.   If one has a copy of all the data on the redirecting server, including the logs of the IP numbers of the computers that have hit the site in the past, can those IP numbers be used to get out the message that there is a re-direct?

Proposal for intergenerational guitar classes by Charlie Mossbrook

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 02/10/2007 - 04:01.

As my first post since realneo.us became realneo.org, I'd like to propose a program of Intergenerational guitar classes, I believe Charlie Mossbrook will be happy to instruct. There should be a suggested payment for the class, to compensate Charlie. I'd love to see the classes held in East Cleveland - perhaps the Helen Brown Center or MacGregor, or both. The class would be open to all ages from say 12 up. I believe the only other thing we would need is guitars - so I guess we will need to ask for donations.

Art of the Day: Sea of Ice/Wreck of the Hope

I am posting this in response to Jeff's insightful comments on that warm, colorful painting from SoCal. Your are right, few artists seem to paint the north and south poles.

Bottled Mahoning River water, anyone?

Submitted by Susan Miller on Tue, 02/06/2007 - 10:51.

Maybe we should see if we could make a buck (or more likely a statement) selling Cuyahoga River cocktails or Lake Erie highballs. If the idea is that enough alcohol will eliminate the need to address our water quality issues, then the folks who have the money to address these issues ought to be happy to swill away on these high powered drinks.  Add enough absinthe and sugar to some Cuyahoga River water and you've got a drink that we might call the Ohio Obliterator. Drink this and forget the Clean Water Act ever happened...

Hull, Ma. High School wind turbine

When I read Ed Morrison's "too much money in your wallet" (so blow it with Super Bowl ads) on RealNeo today,  Ed's discussion got me thinking about incremental change vs dramatic radical change.   The Cleveland Foundation’s President Ronn Richard and the Foundation’s energy advisor Richard Stuebi want Cleveland to be the first City in the US to have “about 10 wind turbines 3 miles out in Lake Erie”.   On January 18, 2007, Mr Richard spoke to the public about the Foundation’s turbine installation aspirations at Levin Urban College at CSU.   In the public discussion period following Mr.

Super Bowl ads, civic engagement, and the risks of too much money

Submitted by Ed Morrison on Sat, 02/03/2007 - 21:56.

At times, too little money is better than too much. Anyone who is worked with start-up companies understands this point.

With too little money, entrepreneurs are forced to be resourceful. They focus on challenges really matter. They learn to learn from their mistakes. When times are tight, entrepreneurs take small steps to test ideas then expand the successful ones. They gain powerful insight from their mistakes.

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN'

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 02/01/2007 - 16:29.

…. Frenetic freeways 247365, $200,000,000.00 (that's 2 HUNDRED MILLION PER FLYOVER!) flyovers where they intersect, sinuous succulents, restaurant food warnings,  smog industry, surf board sign baton twirlers  (sandwich board signs are passé) , cypress shored turquoise beaches, stretch limo woodies, exotic yellow, fuchsia, purple flowers,   cactus, and cars, cars, pickups, cars, SUVS, cars…

[The image above is a collage of 16 separate 2 megapixel JPEG photos taken last week in SoCal .  Each image is dragged onto a checker board - like display on the computer monitor, and then blended by Arcsoft’s “tile” panorama program.  The challenge with the program is to understand its edge blending algorithms – usually the part of the image that you prefer to display is wiped out in the automatic blending process.  So,. like checkers or chess, you have to move your images around and around the board until you obtain your preferred expression. Any suggestions for similar collage software which allows more user control?]
