Linux-Watch had an interesting article about an Australian computer reseller that has an approach for doubling their profit margins by selling computers with open source software, and ultimately the Linux operating system to computer users who are accustomed to using Windows.

Have you ever wanted to find public domain images that you can use for your blog posts or other creative projects? Have you ever used the "right click" approach to save images for some use only to wonder later if your use (school project, blog posting, collage, non-profit use) was within the intent of the owner of that intellectual property?

FAA manages air traffic with Linux

The Federal Aviation Administration has saved $15 million by migrating computers that manage air traffic flow to Linux, according to an announcement issued last week. The upgrade is part of a broader service-oriented architecture initiative that will replace proprietary traffic management systems with applications using Java, Web services, open-source software and Oracle products.

Recently I read the cover article of PC World which advertised 101 Fabulous Freebies (www.find.pcworld.com/52516). It is a description of 101 software downloads or Internet based services that are free. A number of the software products listed are open source. Wikipedia defines Open Source software as "computer software available with its source code and under an open source license. Such a license permits anyone to study, change, and improve the software, and to distribute the unmodified or modified software."

I was very excited to participate in a "Meet the Bloggers" discussion with East Cleveland mayor Eric J. The Digital Photography Special Interest Group of the Greater Cleveland PC Users Group will host a presentation by computer professional Phillip  Williams on the GIMP, a FREE open source graphics creation and manipulation application similar to Adobe Photoshop.  The meeting will be a short "course" showing how to use the GIMP to do common digital imaging tasks, such as manipulating a photo, removing red eye, correcting colors, resizing images and changing them to black & white.

Sherwin-Williams, the NEO based paint company is also known throughtout the Open Source community as one of the first major companies in the U.S. to rollout Linux for their retail infrastructure. IBM has them listed on their site with one page description of what they have done. Needless to say, IBM was the system integrator and hardware supplier for the deployment of the system.

Groklaw started off as a paralegal's blog that analyzed the SCO vs IBM lawsuit. It has since morphed into a large community that analyzes other cases as well, although the focus is still on SCO vs. the World.

This is a test of a blog client called BloGTK. It is a blog client for linux, much like mac users use ectos.

Just testing to see if I can actuall post using it....

Now that I have seen it can work, I need to create a page on how to set up blog clients for Linux, Mac, and Windows(egad!) users. Of course, blog client software is completely optional. You can create blog via the web interface as normal. However, and regardless of the fact that I have been an active Internet user since 1992, I personally don't like web interfaces. I prefer to create my blog entries locally and save them locally to my pc prior to posting them to the blog.

Mozilla Foundation is the non-profit organization that "owns" and develops theFirefox, Mozilla browsers, and the Thunderbird email client.

I missed it, but apparently on the Lehrer-Mcneil Report, there was a section on increased individual participation in "journalism", or what they called "We Media". A large piece of the report was focused on wiki technology. Of course they mentioned Wikipedia. Apparently, wikipedia has over 2 billion hits per month. "Subscribers" to wikipedia outnumber the subscribers to the New York Times, Washington Post, the LA Times(and maybe one or two others) combined.

I saw today that Novell will be focusing on GNOME as there Desktop Envirionment for SUSE, etc. Being a KDE fan I was a little disappointed to see that. But in that same article, I saw a link to an item where the founder of Ubuntu, a Debian-based distribution almost soley focused on Gnome, in fact uses Kubuntu, a KDE focused version of Ubuntu. And that in fact that he wanted to see Kubuntu become more mainstream within the Ubuntu organization.

The Cleveland Linux User Group. The group meets once a month to talk about various linux and/or open source topics. There are also mailing lists to which you can subscribe.

Found an interesting article over at LXer (pronounced Elexer) which posts portions of what is supposedly an internal Intel document suggesting that they will anticipate to sell hundreds of millions of Linux computers in China. From the summary at the top of the article:
