IT'S A DEEP DEPRESSION FOR MANYSubmitted by Roldo on Thu, 09/24/2009 - 12:35.
For some of us the recession is nasty but for minorities it’s a devastating Depression.
That’s the real conclusion of a study by the Center for American Progress.
The report notes that the “severity of the recession has erased most of the modest gains that families experienced in a few areas during the past business cycle from 2002 to 2007, such as homeownership.”
“The decline in economic security during the recession is much sharper for minorities than whites,” the report said.
The report notes poverty at 9.1 percent for whites, 31.2 percent for African-Americans and 28.4 Hispanics.
Those latter figures for minorities show a Depression, not a recession.
Special efforts need to be made on a national level to address these disparities.
One obvious one: health care for those in poverty via a government sponsored program equal to Medicare.

Who says Democracy?
Van Jones represents poor America--Black America. Van Jones is the real progressive.
Van Jones is the voice of Dr. King...not Barak Obama.
That said, empowerment for the greater whole, whom Lord Jesus spoke of as "the least of me" are wasting their time looking to the White House, where instead they should be looking to people like Cornel West, Michael Moore, Cynthia McKinney, Howard Dean, Amy Goodman, Bill Moyers, Robert Kennedy Jr., Bill Maher, John Stewart, Deepak Chopra and others.
In this video, prior posted @ RealNeo, among other things, Van Jones calls out the "clean coal" scam. And yet...Obama has promoted the myth of clean coal.
Isn't that telling...?
So really, should come as a suprise that Van was tossed out of the White House? Obama didn't have the balls to do it himself, so he let FOX News and Glen Beck do it for him.
Why is this relevant? Why the Van/Obama comparison? Because, it should be known that Obama is not the only handsome, yound, super-sophisticated, intelligent black male in this nation.
So let's have a further look.
Van's a goodlooking, charismatic, Ivy League black male; just like Obama. But unlike Obama, his heart belongs to Main Street, not Timothy Geithner's Wall Street or Max Baucus' K Street...Obama's got that covered.
When Dr. King spoke up about the Vietnam War, while also pouring the civil rights struggle into the "poor people's" struggle...that's when he became a REAL threat.
Of course, we all know how that story ended.
But when have we heard Obama speak about the ills of war? Thus for all those who might fret that President O is at risk of being assissinated? First let me say that as a black man myself, in many ways, in this racist nation--world, black and male by default is a risk factor; especially if you think for yourself...speak for yourself. But, Obama will never have to worry about being snuffed out for standing up for the rights of the people, because all he's done is stand up for the rights of the rich.
This President believes that we live in a "post-racial" society; that racism is a virtual non-issue.
Needless to say, the facts speak otherwise!
Obama is a mixed-blessing at best; the face of duplicity at worst. Yet rest assured, there is life beyond Obama, and if poor people (black or white) in this country truly expect to have a better life, they'd better get hip to the sobering facts and invest in more than the celebrity status of the current White House schmooze.
I've said before. I'll say it again. I support Obama. I voted for Obama. He was the best choice @ the time. But if he's the best option that this nation has to offer, what does that say about our democracy?
Today on Democracy Now!, Michael Moore laid it DOWN...no fluff, no nonsense!
